Smashed windows

Hi everyone,
Came out of the gym yesterday to my car to find my rear passenger window and boot window completely smashed. Plus they tried to smash my front window but they just managed to crack that one as is double glazed.
They just took my son's school bag which was in the boot. Called the police and got a reference number but don't know whether to go through the insurance or get a quote from a local garage or if anyone on here has a number for a good glass repairer. Being tinted I imagine the windows, especially the boot one are not going to be cheap. Don't want it to affect insurance for the next 5 years.

You’re obliged to tell your insurer regardless of whether you choose to claim or not.

Why do you say that doodlebug, is there some law that requires that? I had an issue couple of years back and when I had spoken to the actual insurer they said whether I claim or don’t is up to me. They made no comment about me having to inform them and I know for a fact it wasn’t recorded on my file.

Read your policy!!
Think about it as an insurer, just as if you have an accident blameless or not, it changes your risk profile.
This isn’t the same as having your windscreen smashed on the motorway.

It was the front passenger side window which they could not smash

Not sure i fully agree, as i don't see why you'd tell your Insurer about this? Surely this 'could' be treated the same as damage to a wheel by hitting a pothole of curb?
Insurers ask the question "any accidents, claims or conviction in the last 5yrs". Some scrote smashing a cars window doesn't fall within those definitions. I encountered a van w@nker too far over on a narrow road & he clean removed the wing mirror from my wife's 2 day old Volvo XC60. Van w@nker of course didn't stop, but i didn't treat this as an accident & just replaced the wing mirror with a correct model & colour one that i luckily sourced from a local scrap yard (result).
Perhaps i'm being too narrow minded.

I think you need to be aware of what you tell insurance. It will only lead to higher policy prices. I renewed recently and was told I had three no fault claims. Two I was happy to accept even though I wasn’t even in the vehicle at the time, however the third was my wife’s car when she was hit by a deer. I wasn’t even in the car at the time just a named driver. When I questioned this I was told it was all down at the same address.
I would only ever inform insurance what I’m legally obliged to

Sorry to hear someone smashed your windows! Why are there so many horrid people out there nowadays. Hope you get it all sorted - I once had a window smashed so someone could steal a can of red bull that had been left in my car when I was unlucky enough to live in America. That was just one window and I was finding bits of glass for the next year!

Slightly different but...
I had a bike stolen by being cut off the roof rack. I called the insurance company to ask if I was covered and they told me I wasn’t as it was outside the vehicle and left unattended... so I didn’t claim as I couldn’t.
A few months later when the renewal came up, they said that as I’d had a theft my premium had gone up!!! I was pee’d off so I bent the truth and said that I’d forgotten to update them but that fortunately I’d found the bike and it was just my fiends messing around... premium went back down!

Went through insurance/autoglass in the end as I only have to pay the £75 windscreen excess and won't affect my NCD. If I claimed for my son's school bag that they took then that would of been a different story.
Thanks everyone for the advice

Just be aware that autoglass may well fit non-oem glass, also depending on your insurance company.
Worthwhile checking all that before you go ahead.
Result in the circumstances. Good luck

Got it, thank you. I will get them to clarify as I don't want cheaper aftermarket glass on the car.

Probably less important than the windscreen with all its sensors but the different brand logo in the corner would bother me.
