Stone chip on front camera

Post by bn8959 » Tue Feb 13, 2018 4:25 pm

Hi
Ive managed to get a big stone chip on the front parking camera, making it useless.

Audi have just quoted £1,400 to replace and recalibrate the various systems - which seems pretty shocking. I seem to remember seeing the camera module being around £250 from elsewhere (he said the camera was £2,500 and they were discounting it! :audibash: ).
Side assist has stopped working and he claims its related (although it stopped working a couple of months after the camera got its stone chip).

Is it worth trying to take it elsewhere, can independents do the calibration ok?

Thanks
Ben

I think only Audi can recalibrate and they only charge £250ish or just below for the privilege of doing so!!!!!

But I’m sure someone could fit the camera for you? Try hazzydayz.

Are you refurring to the front camera of the parking aid?
If so, they wont sell it seperatly but it is actually a camera and a seperate "fish eye" glass lens. Two seperate parts. I would suggest getting the camera and just replace the lens but leave your original camera (then you dont need recalibration).
Unless we are talking about an other camera, i suppose as the front parking camera isnt linked too the side assist afaik :s. Side assist works with sensors i tought...

Yes, the front camera (below the Audi rings) for the 360 degree parking pack.

That would make sense, maybe he was referring to the camera being the expensive part, but he mentioned they can get a 'kit' at a lower cost - which I presume is just the lens assembly. Still seems a lot!

What needs recalibration? The camera is used by your eyes for parking. Serves no other purpose that I can think of other than I think the speed limit display is also fed from this camera (if you have this option). However, to replace the camera is probably a bumper off job so this means recalibrating the adaptive cruise etc.

Sounds like dealer has no idea though.

Edit: speed limit camera uses the windscreen camera.

I presumed the calibration was just to align the 360 degree image on screen, as it must do some odd warping of the video feeds to align the transitions between cameras. Not exactly critical though - I guess you wouldn't want a short post being hidden in the crossover point between cameras though.

The only concern is why lane assist has also stopped - I cant believe its linked to the front camera - since lane assist looks backwards - I thought it used the ultrasonic sensors for that (since you can have lane assist without the advanced parking pack). The dealer claimed lane assist wont work without the cameras - but I'm sure he's talking BS. I just don't want to go an get the camera replaced by a third party, for then lane assist to continue to be broken, but then Audi refuse to fix it under warranty because they didn't replace the camera! Grr.

I bought a new (360°) camera on ebay for +-50€. Camera comes with lens and gasket ring.
If you lucky you can unscrew the holderplate from between the grill and radiator space. Otherwise you need to remove bumper. Pull battery cable off and definatly dont start ingition with camera unplugged (then it need recalibration).
Like said if it is only the lens, just replace lens otherwise you will get a "no base settings" on the new cam. Cam will work, maybe slighty misalligned, but will fully work.
Roadsigns, lane assist work with the window cam afaik and even that most of the times dont need recalibration as it used stock predefined mount fixed on window.
Dont let yourself ripped at the stealer ;).
Fixed my rear camera (witch is actually same partnumber as the front) that way....

Have you checked to make sure you haven’t accidentally switched it off?

The button is situated in the bottom corner of the drivers side window - basically behind the mounting for the wing mirror

Thats a fair point, im almost certain I haven't turned it off! Car is with Audi still, so I would have really hoped that would have checked that button!

On a positive note, they agreed to replace all 4 DRC suspension struts with the new uprated parts - that probably warrants a different thread though :beerchug:

+1. Following a recent software update my car came back without the lane assist working- for the life of me couldn’t get it working via MMI- then the next day I felt such a fool when I remembered about the button on th A pillar!

Dasquade must be right in that the front camera is not part of lane assist, as I have lane assist (and speed limit display), but no front camera for parking, just a rear one.

They work separately. I retro fitted the 360 deg cameras to mine and they work fine even with out the calibration and with out the side assist which i fitted at a later date.
Suggest you get the camera on ebay and fit it yourself. Side assist have a fault code stored in its module.
