Pot Holes...

Post by Scotty C » Mon Feb 05, 2018 7:01 pm

So... two weeks ago I hit, what can only be described as, a damn great pot hole which caused the inner wall of my winter tyre to split and bulge. I managed to find a supplier locally who replaced it at a cost of £400. Two days later, on another road during the night when it was raining, I hit another damn great hole which was even bigger than the first causing the opposite tyre to do exactly the same. I revisited the supplier who again sourced a replacement at the same price.

I then start to get vibrations through the steering so, knowing what's coming as I have 21's, I booked it in to be check out. As you can imagine, I now have two buckled front wheels to replace as well as the cost of the two tyres and wheel alignment. Have been advised it is not recommended to have the wheels repaired due to the car, type of wheel and amount of damage. Cost to replace from dealer is £1550 each.

The UK roads are a joke and more like what you would find in a third world country. I drive across Europe quite often and have never seen anything quite like what we have here. The roads are strewn with vicious pot holes, many of which could seriously injure or kill a motorcyclist if they were unfortunate to hit one. I have two claims now going through two different councils but pretty sure I am wasting my time as well as my money.

Not happy...

Mate I went through the bishops avenue on weekend where houses have sold for over £50m and you won’t believe the pot holes on that road!

Maybe consider going for the 20” forged concave wheels? I’ve had my fair share of pothole scraps and not effected the wheel in anyway. They are very strong wheels.

And please don’t pay that much for the wheels. You can buy a whole set from Germany with tyres for £2500.
Here are some brand new ones - albeit with winters.

As noted above, if you take a picture of the holes, you can claim for the cost against the local council.

The AA has a page on how to go through this..

rtd - Bishops Ave is a mess, you cant avoid them so you have to drive slow as possible.

Lots of "posh" roads I encounter seem to be deliberately left in a bad state by the residents, I think to discourage through traffic.
Most of them have big Range rovers anyway so don't really notice it themselves.

But considering the bishops avenue is supposed to be one of the most expensive roads in the world it truly is shocking! Almost akin to driving a road in india

I currently have two claims going through two different councils... they include photos of the damage, photos of the pot holes, receipts for 2 x new tyres and also an estimate from the dealer for 2 x new wheels. It has also knocked out the ACC camera and wheel alignment so that will need recalibrating too.

Am quite sure the claims will be a waste of my time as the council will do their best to worm out of admitting liability.

Ive had all four of mine straightened.. done 8k on them now and they are fine.

Guess it depends how bad they are.. mine gave a slight vibration from 60+ mph.

Where are you based? I’d recommend where i went.

If I only ever drove locally then I would certainly consider a repair. However, the dealer advised that due to the amount of damage, the type of car and how I use the vehicle to drive through Germany etc it was not advised to have them straightened, although I appreciate they may be saying this for their own gain.
