Tyre Tred Differentials

Due to a pretty serious tracking issue ive had to replace the 2 rears on my RS6 C7 - both had all the hallmarks of racing slicks in part, so good job I spotted it. So what I have now is new rears on 8mm, and older fronts on 4mm. I think audi recommend only a 2mm differential, so i'm just wondering if I ought to get the fronts done too. Feedback welcome, although with the price of the dam things, it would not be great just after Christmas, but I guess I can keep the older fronts as spares.....

I would’ve thought you’d be better off with the new rubber up front? I.e. swap front and rears
I’m sure the quattro can handle more than 2mm difference but I’ll let someone who knows better to reply to you on that point.

I would get new tyres and use others as spares. And rotate wheels from now on to prevent sane happening again.

You will be fine the car can handle the difference if there was an issue then it would flag up as an error on the dash.
I had to do same in August last year my tread difference wasn’t as much as yours but had no issues 5k later.

I replace summer tyres at 3mm anyway (winter 4/5mm) so I'd soon be looking to replace both the worn ones ASAP.
And as suggested above, keep the worn ones as spares if they match reasonably maker/tread-wise.

This is what I did in the past too
Any big differential I believe can cause transmission issues

If it was a issue it would have to say so in the user manual. Does it mention this? I don't recall it in there.
If you are finding that you are losing grip and can't brake efficiently then it's they should be replaced of course but otherwise if they are still performing as they should I don't think there is an immediate need to change them.

Handling is fine - but then from the slicks before anything would be better. I thought the power split was 60 40 with 60 on the rears, hence why I thought i;d get the newer rubber on there.
Overall, given there is 4mm on a pair at the front getting those replaced now probably makes sense and they are then a good pair of spairs (as I know to my peril that getting a replacement tyre fast can be tricky!!) - i'l only end up continually chasing this if I dont. Then I can properly manage the wheel rotates too.

Have you had the tracking adjusted? Common issue on the C7 - have a search through the C7 section. Mike above has had his done and has posted in detail about it
Modern cars come with increasing rear axle toe-in to give a safe / understeer set-up. This is what eats your rears. Dial the rear axle toe-in to zero and it will much reduce your rear tyres fighting against each other.

Absolutely - I was shocked as to how far out it was - huge tyre wear on the outer offside and inner near side. But now all properly alligned, but it was a real eye opener. Ive got the print out somewhere so i'll check how they set it up. It was my local Tyre Pro's who did it - they told me they have a few RS6 drivers that they look after. Was happy with the prices and the service - much better than the audi dealer who initially told me that they could not fit the tyres for 3 weeks!! - then when I made a fuss they couldnt get the stock in...
