Unfortunately the merc still doesn’t do it on the looks front I’m afraid. If Mercedes had put 4wheel drive on the old naturally aspirated v8 then may be just may be I might have been tempted as that sound is something else. Twin turbo you lose that sound so it’s a No from me. As for the comments, why wouldn’t you want a monster family estate with an 8spd box 👍👍👍

Skirs6 - I don't mean this as a negative against the Audi but just from my experience. The AMG engine and exhaust notes from the M157 (5.5L V8 BiTur) and newer M178 (4L V8 Hot BiTur) have a much fruiter exhaust note out of the box than the current RS6PE engine with sport exhaust. I also add an IMHO as everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Once you start changing things then all bets are off and its down to your choices. When both cars are as nuts as these two then it becomes personal choice. Both are mental case quick and highly practical.

I have to agree , when it come to noise, the Mercs do sound better, even in turbo charged form!

I was in a dealers the other day sitting in a new e63S and gave it some revs. I can concur the sound was louder and more guttural in the merc.

Still wouldn't like to take a £40k bath after 1 year of ownership though, their depreciation curve seems significantly worse than the RS6 (until the new version comes out).

Inside I felt it was a nicer place to be, more tech and gadgetry. Will take one for a drive in the not too distant and report back again.

Misses the V8 noise but has all the tech

I am sitting in an ML63 with the slightly older BiTur 5.5L V8 and it is a real giggle on full blast with just the factory exhaust. Having said that the 720bhp upgrade with a custom exhaust etc is nagging my mind constantly.

My mate took me from Surrey to Poole to collect my Merc in his wife's 2 year old remapped one of those.

He then bought a cancelled order 50 edition GT C whilst I was going through my paperwork as he was getting bored waiting !!

I can assure you that neither of those turbocharged V8s sound dull!!!

AMG is renowned for its exhaust note-I’ve ‘downgraded’ to an A45 AMG and the sports exhaust note isn’t too bad considering it’s only a 2 litre 4 pot-lots of cracks on the overrun which is fun. Still not a V8 though which I miss but then again it’s half the price!

Who cares about Mercedes Turkish taxi, design is ugly I am talking about estate e63s, sound on rs6 can be easy fixed by adding Miltek exhaust, that would beat amg sound

I know which i'd rather have today, but this comparison between the 3 cars that sit in the sector, that being M5/RS6 & E63 is kind of pointless other than bragging rights & a good 6 pages of review in the motoring rags.

Today, the E63S is the quicker, most dynamic & better equipped of the 3 as it's by far the newest. In March next year the new F90 M5 will take the crown as has already moved the goal posts being a good 12mths more recent for launch than the AMG & by all accounts will actually sound better than the E63S if the Sports exhaust is optioned. In late 2018 or early 2019 (i assume) Audi will launch the next gen RS6, which common sense would suggest is unlikely to be worse than the BMW & AMG so will at least be back in the game or could raise the bar even further. That kind of depends if Audi do something new as both BMW & AMG have with them both being AWD but the ability to switch to RWD.

Also & i'm not well up on the AMG, but BMW have applied the very latest Tech to the F90 M5, but Audi with their Virtual Cockpit etc. may choose that path for the next RS6, so could already be a couple of years behind the competition. Who knows, but i'm sure all 3 will continue to own the space & their varying characteristics will be what decides which one to buy.

If you want to roll your eyes read some of the comments on that piece in PH...full of the usual idiots grinding their axes. One or two voices of reason though including this guy:

‘Some find it difficult to be happy for others. Let's face it, most if not all of those comments are from people who simply cannot afford either car. It makes them feel better about themselves if they can disregard it as 'pointless' or the often used "more money than sense" response.

It's as much a societal problem than it is individual.’

Well said that man. I loved owning an RS6 (both C6 and C7) and all the petty comments from jealous gobshites is ridiculous.
