Active Noise Cancellation

Post by raywong » Wed Aug 16, 2017 10:01 am

Hi,
Does anyone know if the C7 RS6 come with ANC or how to turn it off?
I think my exhaust mod is making the ANC behave very strangely.
From outside the car my exhaust sound quite full and balanced in all frequency range, but inside the cabin it sounded hollow and un-natural, the subwoofer produce a low drone in certain situations.
Any thought?

This topic will help you a bit....

Afaik all RS6 has them as they come with COD (cilinder on demand), as ANC was more or less introduced to counterbalance the engine/exhaust note when going into 4 cilinder mode.
Visually it is easy to identify, look at your headliner. It should have 4 little microphones above each seat above the windows.
Depends on your sound system: bose versus b&o, but if not mistaken also depending on pre or post facelift.
On my car, pre facelift S6 bose, ANC is found under sound 'actuator for engine' (forgot module code) and not sure if you can actually turn it off. You can however recalibrate it by simply active the 'return to factory settings'. Sadely my car is a 'light van' and no rear seats, so apperently the system is non active (and shows as non active in vag), oddly recently i clearly heard an counter noise that was off. Dealer hadn't had a clue how car knows if back seats are folded or not.

Anyway, more info on ANC and it's conditions can be found in the audi 4.0TT selfstudy.
Personally, i would try the recalibrate option first, check if that helps the interieur sound (but heard some say it f**s up the normal radio/whatever sound quality if ANC is on). Not sure if you can turn it off in the module itself, not sure if there is a fuse, but i sure know there is a microphone cable going into the amp in the trunk, so disconnecting that one would dissable ANC i guess :p.

Whilst I've heard of noise cancellation I had absolutely no idea it was used in cars. Feel like I've been living under a rock and missed this thing that the world seems to already know about! Similar thing happened at the beginning of the week with a comment about air wedges. WTF is a bloody air wedge I thought! I now own one :)

I bet a lot of people who has exhaust mod didn’t realise they had ANC. You make the exhaust louder by removing resonators, and the ANC will work harder to suppress it. It is almost like poking holes on my Bose ANC earphone so that I can hear the outside better... the sound will be all messed up. This also explains why some people perceive very minimal change of sound level inside the car after resonator delete. My car had the 3 resonators deleted, while it sounds quite sweet from outside, it sounded hollow and un-natural inside. I often hear the nauseating drone from the subwoofer.

Bump!

If you do a res delete or have an aftermarket exhaust, you may hear a low pitched humming noise coming from the sound system. This is the Active Noise Cancelling System trying to balance out the new frequencies of the car.

Its worthwhile resetting your ANC using VCDS

For Bose:
47-Sound System
Adaptation - 10
Active noise reduction; activation SET TO OFF

Turn off ignition
Turn on ignition

47-Sound System
Adaptation - 10
Active noise reduction; activation SET TO ON

Sometimes the ignition on/off cycle may not be enough to reset the Bose Amp, so safest way is to disconnect it entirely from the plug harness in between the settings to ensure it has restarted with the new setting.

All drone noises gone

Who wants to make exhaust note so loud inside a car? Better others hear outside a car
