Launch Control Programme - FYI

For those who might have given up before they got less than half way through the Owner's Manual and not come across the Launch Control Programme instructions, and for those who might have missed this elsewhere:-

See page 99 of the Owner's Manual:
The "Launch control PROGRAMME gives you optimum acceleration when starting from a stand-still. Important- the engine must be warm and the steering wheel must be pointing straight-ahead. (I gather steering inputs can override the optimum gear change/ power/ revs position and the revs will rise to the rev. limiter to the detriment of maximal duration power output.)
-Deactivate the start/stop system. The The LED in the A button will light up.
-Deactivate the hold assist. The LED in the button will go out.
-Switch the electronic stabilisation control (ESC) to sport mode (by depressing it briefly)(page 157). The ESC (TC) lamp will light up.(There is also a message that you have partially switched it off that briefly occupies the onboard computer display.)
(Page 57- In ... special situations, it may be advisable switch on the (ESC) sport mode.... to allow a certain amount of wheelspin. Applies to RS model: The ESC operates in several levels. Depending on which level is selected, the stabilisation function of the ESC is restricted or switched off, and the vehicle is stabilised to a greater or lesser degree.)
-Briefly pull the selector lever back from D/S to select position S, or select DYNAMIC mode in drive select.
-Press the brake pedal firmly with your left foot and hold it down for atleast one second.
-At the same time, press the accelerator all the way down with your right foot until the engine revs are high and steady.
-Take your foot off the brake within 5 seconds.
WARNING
-Driven wheels may start to spin ....
- When acceleration has been completed, you should deactivate the sport mode again by briefly pressing the ESC (TC) button.
-The gear box may be hot after you have used the launch control programme. In this case, the PROGRAMME may not be available for several minutes. The programme will be available again after a cool-down period.
-Accelerating with the launch control programme places a heavy load on on all parts of the vehicle. This can result in increased wear and tear.

My understanding is that a certain amount of wheel spin (more than is normally allowed when the ESC is switched on every time the engine is started) is required, possibly to build some inertia and torque and increase friction. Too much spin is obviously deleterious to a quick getaway, but then so is too much safety interference from the ESC(TC).

Is Launch Control any good? The proof of the pudding is in the eating; there's lots of U tube video out there of the RS7 (American's don't have the RS6) showing impressive C7 getaways, time and again, thanks to Audi's quattro system (and Launch Control Programme) agains all sorts of opposition.

what do the revs hold at with the accelerator depressed?
Assume this can't be changed "in car"

"Launch programme" is overstating things a bit. All of the pre-launch steps described are essentially minimising the intrusion of traction control[ TC will usually cut throttle input when wheel slip is detected]. Holding your foot on the brake until the revs and boost build to the point that the car is straining on the leash is again nowhere near what occurs for a DSG launch. That said, on the 4 occasions that I have done it (there is apparently a max of 200 launches hence why I know my number) "slush box" or not it is absolutely brutal. I had VCDS connected at the time and even with my limited ability I could better the Audi stated 3.9seconds and it is likely it was quicker still given VCDS scan time etc. The test track surface was not the best, but even so there was limited slip, Check out the Chris Harris review on yootoob against an AMG CLS for some slow-mo video showing minimal wheel slip on "launch".

The track was short (so 0-60 was all I was testing for, I backed out of it soon after 60). Rev limit point is not configurable on mine, I read somewhere that guys who have heavily modded their RS6s tend to hold the revs below the preset limit point to presumably get even better traction off the line. I checked my VCDS logs but don't have a record of the revs. It was less than 3500rpm by can't remember exactly what it was. It was a couple of years ago and i've never had the itch to try "launching" since.

Tempted to go and have a play now!

How do you go about capturing the above data in VCDS? I've only used it for tweaking, not data capture.

Harrier, what year is your RS6? When I had my RS6 I read through all of my manual ( which I still have) and I've read through it again. No where in my manual does it have any of what you have posted relating to "launch control program". Example of my page 99

Eddie, pretty sure it is not shown in my manual either.

So likely I wasn't blind then! Not that I ever paid attention to Manuel.

I have read about that launch program before. BUT. That was for my S5 cab ( S-tronic) and a RS3 8v (S-tronic) that I had on loan. Believe it or not I've just dug out the manual for the A3 tdi and that has the launch program.

I think harrier is reading it out of his wife's S3 manual or he has a "S6" manual which are S-Tronic.

Doodles talking about another subject. He's on about the threesome he had with Manuel and his boyfriend. He was that busy getting bummed he "didn't pay any attention to Manuel" bashing his bishop beside him.
