can this be retrofitted and if so what's involved please? I currently have the bit in the centre console with 2 usb's in and an aux port

Providing you have a MY17 car the 'activation path' in the system can be made live very easily. All you need to do is use an activation code (which Audi can sell you) that is after you have used VCDS to turn in the CarPlay menus is in the MMI.
Anything earlier than MY17 isn't possible because the "smartphone interface" requires a hardware module and specific wiring plus coding that is factory only.
