Starting to get frustrated with the second hand car market

Post by drbru » Mon Mar 06, 2017 11:26 am

So a bit of history...We have our second baby coming in May so Ive been browsing the internet since Nov 2016 trying to get a feel for what I can get on the second hand car market between 50-60k...I will have a prestine and fully loaded F10 m5 to sell but Im waiting until all is well with the baby before I put my car up for sale privately and then really push hard to find an RS6 as I need it for a road trip in the summe - I will therefore basically have 2 months to sell my own car and buy the right RS6 in the spec I want.

Since Nov I have noticed that unsurprisingly with this type of car, the majority of second hand cars are for sale via dealers. I have to admit, Im surprised as to how the values have held up relatively well. Thinking of my own M5, the original purchase price was 98k but when I will sell this car 5 years on, someone will be getting a mint fully loaded M5 for 30k at the very most - my m5 has 44k on the clock and is literally in brand new condition and you will not find a better spec currently in this country

When speaking to dealers however, none of them are willing to budge on price but the same cars appear week after week on pistonheads/autotrader with no price reduction and dealers are obviously struggling to shift them which begs the question...if a dealer has an RS6 sitting with them for weeks and sometimes months on end, why will they not drop the price to get a sale; if they cant sell the car, surely this is a clear indication that it is not priced well and hence they need to drop the price??

Whats going in the second hand car market with these cars??

Having sold mine back in Jan I'd say stock is shifting nicely. It'll be the less desirably spec'd cars that will linger. Decent spec 2015 onwards car is going to be over 60k.

My car was bought for 54600 and they'll have it on the forecourt for 72k plus - be warned though it's a lemon!

It is not in the interests of anyone to start hacking into the used values of the car (any car) until it is necessary (i.e. not in the interests of the dealer, the manufacturer or the existing owners; of course, it is in the interests of someone looking for a cheap car).

There aren't that many RS6s out there. They look good in the showroom. So, why start a race to the bottom? Sell one off cheap and you will never sell another one for more than that.

When I was looking last May, I looked at 7 and they all sold within 2 weeks.

Jumped on one at JCT600,BentleyLeeds - was only advertised for 1 day - they even put up the price from 64 to 67 as they were getting getting so many calls on it.... bought it over the phone. Not regretted anything about it since - best all around car I've owned. Will keep it until the new one is out......

You shouldn't have an issue bailing on your M5 - a mate of mine was looking for 3months ; he wanted an early F10 - couldn't find one for love nor money as stock kept moving at his price point £32k - finally found a Monte Carlo one with 45kmiles.

Thanks for all your comments guys....

I can only go by my own experiences over the last few months but the reality is at my price point, the cars appear week after week on the same for sale websites so the ones im looking at are not shifting and dealers will not budge on price...I enquired about a fully specced RS in Jan which was up for 62k and the exact spec I was after...Spoke to the dealer a few days ago..they still have the car and are still not willing to consider a price reduction.

I then equired about a PX value on my M5 and when they offered 19k I basically got pissed off and walked away as mine is worth at least 30k albeit with a private sale

Have you offered your car up via Tootle?

If you were waving the cash at them it might be a different story.

Personally, Id shift the M5 first. If your dream RS6 comes up, you don't want both cars on your drive, two lots of insurance + tax. If having both together is an absolute no-no, you do not want to be stressing about offloading the M5 fast. Glorious car, and yes us fast-estate-loving types all know somebody who has owned one, but its hardly the easiest car on the planet to sell privately

(especially true if the back-up-option Tootle is waaaay off the mark)

This also puts the money in your pocket to negotiate, and I completely agree with Doodle on this point. If you met in person the dealer with the £62k RS6, offered to put a few grand deposit down and told them you'd shake at 60k, I bet they'd bite

Dealers must get fed up of dreamers and people calling to ask 'whats your best price' - if the car isnt miles away, Id turn up, show you are keen, dangle the carrot and leave - make them do the chasing!

(Im NOT saying you are a dreamer - Im sure you can see the point im trying to make!)

Edit - opps you have F10 saloon, for some reason I was picturing V10 estate. Should be easier to sell privately you'd imagine. Maybe price it keen starting with a '2' ?

Totally agree in respect to the used car locator pistonheads etc mostly the same 30 odd cars at Audi haven't changed in past month or longer they can argue all day there price is high because of spec but can guarantee the person who traded it got top book at best but you put your car in with 10 k extras on and they won't give shilling more for it ! Some are keen and want a sale and was offered 5 grand off a 60 k car but decided it was more mileage than I was happy with and wanted a 1 owner car at most

It's very hard to get a top deal at main dealers. I can see it from both sides. Having just bought a C7 since purchase it's had two lots of paintwork new front headlight unit new front pads, new handbook plus case. New rear light fixings and grommets. Plus it has a full years Audi extended warranty which isn't cheap. I would never trade a car through a main dealer unless I had no other option.
