The CS5s that came with the car are completely shot so I need new summer tires. I am looking to buy soon as the prices are always better during the winter. I am looking at the Pilot SS based on all the rave reviews they are getting by forum members. The only thing of concern is the fact that they don't come with the "Silent" technology that the Contis do. People that have switched over do you find the interior noise significantly higher. I do many highway miles and tyre drone could be an issue. Please chime in.

The new CS6 isn't available in 285 and I also don't know if it has the Contisilent tech but it is available in 295/30/21. It is meant to be superior in every way to the CS5. 295/30 would provide a little extra sidewall for those brittle 21s but it might rub. Anyone running 295s without issues? The CS6s in 295 are also substantially cheaper than the Pilot SS in 285.

Just switched to the Michelin upon recommendation on here - noise is fine; if anything better.

Rob has facelift car so front windows are double glazed as standard which will help minimise noise. Gorun, do you have double glazing? Either way, i find the stereo is loud enough to drown out any road noise.

I do have the double glazing even though I didn't spec it. What about those 295s...Do you think they will fit?

Without spacers or lowering I think the width would be ok but they will also have an increased sidewall height as you mentioned so might be a bit close with a full load. Are you on air or springs?

Ive buckled two wheels so far so maybe some extra sidewall is good. Its only 3mm extra I think.

The only think I'd say is double check with your insurance company cause they're not R01. As per most policies anything which is not OEM must be declared.

In general going up a width can be offset by dropping a profile 285/30 = 295/25 close match for speedo and sensor accuracy.
The width of the alloy should allow it to be held firmly.

I would be concerned about the impact on the rim on our perfectly maintained British roads.

I flipped to Michelins PSS and they have improved things.

295/25 will be quite a bit shorter than a 285/30, to the tune of 11.75mm less radius (73.75mm tyrewall vs. 85.5mm). A 295/30 will have a radius 3mm greater than the 285/30.

MPSS much better than my previous contis- slightly more noise, possibly slightly more elevated in the back than the front (I don't have any of the double glazed windows) but then you are pretty much sitting between the wheel wells in the rear so to be expected. By no means intrusive enough to cause any issues for me though and I often like to drive with the tunes off.

Michelin SS just quieter than Pirelli with noise reduction according to official dB ratings.

I presume that you judge by the EU label which concerns exterior noise. Silent tech on the RS tyres aims to reduce interior noise.

And where do you think that interior noise comes from? It does reduce transmission inside so may be quieter but given it starts off noisier it needs to be BUT (edited to add) looking at official Mich and Pirelli info suggests both 73dB so Pirelli should be noticeably quieter inside.

Continental claims that the interior tyre roar comes from the hollow space between the tyre and rim hence their technology. Very little to do with the exterior road noise. Just ignore that rating. It is for the pedestrians. There was an extensive article about it. Cant be bothered to search.

As I said ignore me - the info I had suggested Pirelli was 3dB more than Michelin (up to twice as loud in drive by) so it would need noise cancelling foam to stop that extra noise entering the cabin via wheel hub and suspension. But my source was crap and both tyres actually make same road noise, so Pirelli should be quieter for occupants.
