Potential new owner - few basics

Post by E14STO » Fri Jan 20, 2017 1:39 pm

Hi, been floating round here for a while as looking at RS6 (have had a couple of B5 RS4 and a TTS B7 RS4)

Few quick questions-

Resale /depreciation -
Is purple more attractive or less attractive? I love it but sepang might be a safer option.
White leather - how does this hold up. Quite a few with this interior. Does it wear well - bit worried about dye from clothes etc
I test drove a 65 plate facelift at Audi, he wasn't sure if it had air or DRc. I could change the settings on the centre display. Is this available for both suspension variants or just those with DRC.
The brakes were warped... 6000 miles! Having had a B7 and B7 brakes on my B5's this wasn't really a shock! :-)

What are essentials?
it seemed to have everything apart from pan roof, reverse camera and HUD.
I'm also interested in stage 2/3 cars so the sports exhaust is not a necessity although I've heard that downpipes and the standard exhaust works quite well...

Thanks in advance

I like the purple and nardo but as you worried about resale so went for Sepang!

White leather, marks easily but just have a pack of baby wipes in the glove box.

Can't comment on the brakes, mine are fine :biggrin2:

Extra's are only essential if you want them, they make very little difference price wise come resale, certain ones may make the car easier to sell though. The pano roof is nice and I would have liked it on mine, but colour, other spec, mileage, condition and of course price led me to a mint car without.

I haven't seen Merlin Purple on an RS in the flesh yet, but funnily enough on Sunday am seeing a friend's new RS7 so looking forward to it.

There is a guy who is called RS4TDI on Instagram who has a very popular Merlin Purple RS6 and it looks great, but then his photos are well taken, always in the sunshire and he details his cars regularly. I have seen a normal looking TT in Merlin in normal light and i thought it looked awful.

I would want a reversing camera for sure. That means you don't have advanced parking either which is very, very handy for such a big car.

Consider the heat it takes to warp brake discs. In road use, it is just impossible. A rumble from the brakes is normally down to pad deposits being left on the discs, creating an uneven surface and a feeling like they are warped.

Thanks so far.
Purple looks good for sure, with the black optics.
It isn't a colour that suits the TT - I've seen one too in that paint.

Appreciate comments about spec - the one I drove didn't have reverse camera but had the screen that pops up with the sensor fields that flash (same as my wife's cupra r)
I'd like pano roof - this one didn't have it.

Essentials for me - 21's. The old style wheels on the new RS6 just don't float my boat.

I thought it was pretty quick for a big car and it put the power down very well.
Just very quiet, most will like this in this kind of car but I need some exhaust note!! :-)

Maybe not warped discs, but they need skimming or a series of big braking manoeuvres to clear them off.
This is a common fault on the brembo Audi brakes - I've never had issues with any other car before.
They'd need sorting either way!

The surround camera is a good uplift from the rear parking camera as it is a big wide car with expensive rims and tight car parks with high kerbs.

I have never warped a set of discs in my life (Skyliner GTR33V at 700bhp over 100,000 miles on the same discs). My 9 month old 2016FL model warped the front discs with road use only. Not even aggressive road use. Replaced under warranty.

I am not overly impressed with the audio quality so if you can get the upgrade it is worth it. It is not cheap so I don't expect it will be on that many cars.

I am on Air suspension and whilst it can be a little soft on comfort it is good for the miles, Auto sorts out those sudden moments of madness or the drive select button on the steering wheels.

PE models get the Sports exhaust and it was an option on the 560bhp cars, it is on the quiet side without it. It is even a little bit quiet with it. If it is not fitted then just go for an aftermarket. If it is fitted then you can get some inserts that cause the flaps to remain open and give it the louder "sport setting" growl sound but without the whip-crack silly noises.

What settings could you change for the suspension? If it is comfort, dynamic etc then yes they all have this. The air also has a ride height setting somewhere. Or you could just look inside the front wing; if you see a spring it had DRC.

The sound quality is actually surpsingly good if you disconnect the centre channel speaker and feed it a decent quality recording. Agreed the B&O is better but the Bose can sound good. Add a decent subwoofer and it's a competent system. As far as I can tell there is no difference in the source between the 2 systems, it's just the amps and speakers. Once the centre speaker is disconnected, stick a nice acoustic guitar track FLAC on and it'll impress.

I'm going back today to have another look at sepang and Daytona.
Will check for springs :-)
I'll have a search as I'm sure the questions have been asked before about pre FL v FL.
Ie options and std equipment
(Was B@O an option in pre fl for example?)

I think the right spec 64 plate for a few grand cheaper than a low spec fl would be my preference.

Wonder what you can knock straight off once they exceed the 3 year warranty. 13 cars tend to be low 50's...
The 2 I'm looking at, one has 8 months left the other has 18 months left.
Fl is worse spec'd and slightly more miles.
4K difference in price...

B&O always an option but not often seen.

Warranty probably not material, in fact worse where there's no factory support as that'll be cost to the dealer.

FL did have better base spec.

I always use independents anyway at first opportunity so aside from warranty requirements I wouldn't go back to Audi.

One thing that concerns me is the pre FL car has done 3,500 miles - perhaps not enough for any jiggles to appear - have seen threads about the odd lemon!

For me when I was looking

21's
Sports Exhaust
Pan Roof
Connect - but having seen it, I can live without it as mine doesn't have it.
Sepang
Wanted the quattro grille, couldn't find one so put the badge on for £25

Had HUD on my RRS - wanted it on the 6 but have got used to it without it. Digital speedo on dash is default for me!!

Residuals are strong on the cars - every one I went after (7) in the space of 2 weeks sold!! found one 90% fitted the bill at JCT600 and pushed the button.

You will not regret buying one!!

Have come from Porkers the odd lambo, Rangeys and X5's
The 6 ticks all the boxes - If I had to transport my family across the country in torrential weather conditions, the 6 is what I would pick !!

Thanks Iain - did you have the white TTS Rs4 - same time when I had the sepang blue one?
That was a beaut.

I went today again, they have 4 in and the sepang with black optics and 21's looks miles better than the others imho - but it's the lowest spec!
