New RS & MMI ipod question

Post by scottie1979 » Tue Dec 01, 2015 10:06 pm

Finally picked the motor up on Saturday there. 200 mile drive home was a blast but the weather was so wet so only managed to get indoor shots in the showroom.

First question is - i have an old ipod 16gb that i i have all my music loaded onto. I used to have this plugged into previous audis using their 'special' connector in the glove box.
On this one there isnt the same port to plug into. However i do have two USB ports in the center armrest.

What im finding though is that i dont get any of my playlists. I can search by album etc etc but no playlists.

Am i missing something?

I dont want to use the blue tooth streaming as i dont have the room on my phone, and want to stay away from the SD cards if i can, utilising the old ipod is the ideal if possible?

my solution, when I had the RS6 for the weekend, get an iPhone 128Gb and plus it in via USB to one of those ports, copy your music to iTunes with iCloud match (£25 per year) then the iPhone on latest software allows you to access your entire music library. Unfortunately this signals the death of your iPod.

Not quite sure I understand what the problem is?

You should have received an adapter cable when you picked up the car and the salesman showed you through all the controls. There are 2 options for the iPhone/iPod, the old style connector and the lightning connector. If you didn't receive this with the car and weren't shown how the MMI works, then that's very poor service :audibash:

There are 2 USB connections in the armrest but they are not the same, one is for the AMI so full functionality over the play lists etc, the other is just a normal USB as far as I'm aware which will not give you full functionality over your playlists.

I actually have no idea what Boff is on about above, why would you need a 128gb iphone and then copy your music to iTunes and then subscribe to icloud match? All you need is an 8/16gb cheap ipod and a connection cable if you don't want to continually plug your iPhone in and out

I think what Boff was on about is that if you have a big enough iPhone you can get your entire music library in your car using iTunes Match then you don't have to bother changing the music on your iPod and just use your phone to save yourself the hassle.

Admittedly I'm behind the loop and have no idea what iTunes match is. My music library consists of about 1000 tracks and takes up about 6gb in space so have my library on both my iPhone and my in car iPod. I just leave my iPod in the car 24/7, fit and forget, saves the ball ache of connecting and disconnecting the iPhone every time I jump in and out the car.

The only time I take the ipod out the car is when I add new tracks into my library, a quick sync via PC from iTunes to the ipod and that's it.

Perhaps I'm behind the times though as I couldn't tell you what iTunes match does.

To be honest, by far the easiest and lowest cost option is to just go the SD card route - you can pick up a decent SD card for under £25 and its nicely integrated to the MMI.
You can then copy some of the music over to the juke box and put more on the SD card, saves plugging your phone/ipod in and out, wont require streaming off anything or the apple subscription etc... eating up data allowances.

Was going to say similar. With 64gb SD Cards being peanuts & 128gb not a huge cost (assuming the Audi can handle larger capacity SD cards nowadays), just fill one of these up & leave it in the car. You can remove/add albums with ease. Also can't you connect a small portable HD to one of the SD slots as again if the car can handle the capacity you can surely fit an entire library onto one of those as well as a significant number of Videos & just tuck the HD away.

Final option & again i assume the new RS6 has some kind of Connected Drive functionality, can't you access Spotify or the like from the MMI?

In my car i have a 64gb USB Stick with about 40gb of music & 20gb of video (music videos & films), the in car Media Drive (15gb) filled with music & i run Spotify with a specific Playlist for the car that i can add to or amend from my PC or Phone. Also gives the capability to listen to new music, in fact any album you desire whilst on the move.

Thanks for the replies.

They actually had a lightning connector looked out for me but (and i havent double checked myself to be fair) when he went to install it there is no longer a connection for it in the glovebox. I need to look myself but was this removed for the MY16 cars? Any new owners confirm?

So all i have is the two USB slots in the center armrest. (might be worth noting i have audi connect and phone box option??). I was told one was fast charge and the other standard (assume lower voltage). I havent tried the old ipod in the other usb as mentioned above, perhaps that will solve my issue.

In actual fact i tried the SD card route last night and it works fine. Its a work around and a faf adding more tracks sorting order etc etc, but certainly fit for purpose if all else fails. I used the SD card route previously for audio books to keep them out of my ipod so random play wouldnt suddenly get you a book chapter.

I bet i go check now and find the adapter cable port in the glovebox :bash:

I cant see Spotify as an option in connect but assume you can bluetooth from your phone, or use alternative like Amazon music etc. All fine around town but becomes a pain on longer journeys with the mobile connection.

I have a MY16 car, no connection in the glovebox, just the 2 usb slots in the armrest. (The AMI lightning cable I have is a USB fitment so slots into the armrest)

They moved over to the two USBs at the facelift, I think; certainly my MY15 car has only the USB connections, no AMI. The old AMI system is now redundant and everything can be done via USB. As noted above, only one of the USB connections supports the functionality of the old AMI system, the other is a plain USB port.

Not so, both USBs can support AMI. Only one can charge.

Bizarrely, according to the manual, both USBs can be used for charging and connecting to AMI. My dealer told me to use the port with the pic of a phone on to connect a media device but the manual says use either for both connection and charging. Wonder why they have different icons, then.

just tried over lunch - yeh both have the same functionality with the ipod. Problem still stands though - how do i get the ipod playlists?

i was told that the one with the icon delivers a faster charge.

Hi,

I have my Jolla phone plugged on one USB and tied with Bluetooth and the other USB linked to an iPod touch. Both ports charge and ports ports connect to the AMI. What I found to be a real pain with the iPod was that I could not use the search facility to find music and with over 100GB that was a PIA. I think I read somewhere else that playlists were also not easy with iPods. What I ended up doing was getting a 256GB SD card to store all the music.

This one from Amazon http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00O ... ge_o02_s00 was the best I could find and has been faultless. I also followed the instructions here http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/show ... an-SD-Card to get playlists working.

I now use the iPod connected to the car WiFi and a SIM in car to get podcasts. The iPod stays in the car and has the benefit of being an impromptu tracker, or sorts, with the find my ipod feature; just in case anyone nicks it and leaves the iPod in place.
