I swapped from an E63 amg becasue it was not type approved to tow even though a E350 was. The concern I had was that it would invalidate the merc warranty and may invalidate my car insurance when towing ) Merc said they would not fit a tow bar as it was not type approved and would not recommend it as the E63 was not designed for towing hence why going for the RS6 with towpack.b7rs4saloon wrote:The guys are correct.
When you spec the car to be built you cannot have DRC and tow pack, in Audi's eyes you must have air suspension to be able to tow. I suspect this is so that the car auto levels and jacks the back end up when the trailer is on. You also put the car into towing mode as in my Q7.
I have fitted a towbar on a C7 RS6 with dynamic pack and DRC and not had any issues. As I stated previously tho is because I know how to load a trailer for towing, you must have a big nose weight. We've all seen the Mondeos towing caravans where the front wheels are nearly off the floor and the exhaust is dragging on the floor, the air suspension is designed to compensate that, however a correctly loaded trailer will give you no problems.
General very crude rule is that if you can't lift the hitch then it's too heavy, I would have said no more than 60Kg nose weight and you will be fine, just make sure you balance about the axle correctly.
My concern with an after market tow hook on an RS6 is about the warranty/type approval - Im sure it can tow well but if its legally allowed (as not air suspension) or insurance allowed (due to different spec from audi require) I would sooner not take that risk. I would want it in black n white that you are covered on insurance and warranty.
