New R8 steering wheel

Post by rob-s » Wed Nov 04, 2015 6:33 pm

Has anyone fitted a New R8 steering wheel in a C7 (S6/S7/RS6/RS7) or does anyone know if its possible? (airbag cable and button functions)

That wheel interacts with the MIB2 infotainment system as found in the Q7 and the TT, a very different beast to the one fitted in the C7. I can't imagine it would work - if it did, you would probably have some - or a lot of - redundant buttons.

So most buttoms will most likely not function but will the airbag cable's socket fit? Has anyone fitted or tried a new TT/TTS steering wheel?

Once you've binned all the buttons it's the same, why bother?!

Any update on this?
Scored this type of steeringwheel on ebay and should be getting an S6 C7 avant (11/2013).
Guess time will tell...
*i'm sure the start/stop button won't work, but at least hope the drive select works. At least the drive select works on the new rs6 performance steeringwheels fitted in the S6 C7 from what i read.

R8 system is very different to the C7 system, so can't see many of the buttons being able to be made to work

The RS6 PE Driver Select button is a reconfiguration of the customiser button (*), which is also present on this R8 wheel. If anything works at all , then your Driver Select is more likely to work via the * button than the dedicated "Driver Select" button, which is likely to send an unrecognised signal to the MMI.

Good luck with this, but I am not hopeful for your chances of success.

Bit out of my league, but wouldn't there be a way to recode/rewire or even remodule things so some stuff could work?
Alternatifly, would there be a way to tap into...lets say the 'start-stop engine' button and use it for something non-mmi related like stinger on/off.
Same for an after market exhaust value...
I know it is wishfull thinking :).
Imho i could life with the fact only the volume buttons work (currently in my car with multifunc rs6 wheel i only use volume button, the other ones almost never).

Anyway, normally mine should be here one of these day. If it helps i will try to post some wire/connector pins pictures. No car except for 'old' A4 B8 to test on for now...
Time will tell :)

You'd need to create an emulator, which isn't a simple job and requires actual electrical/engineering credentials.

The types that could do it, generally are paid well enough to afford those luxury’s from new!

With new cars like the R8 containing over 100 control modules, there is probably one just for the steering wheel, in which case it's going to take more than a soldering iron to fit.

So i got a mail back from a 'local' retrofit compagny saying in principal most buttons will work (beside the view button witch toggle the virtual cockpit view i guess?) but alternatively the A6/S6/RS6 MIB2 components can be retrofitted (overall they go pretty cheap on ebay imho, used offcourse).
Guess once i get both (car and steeringwheel) i better check out what works and what doesn't :).
Thought i read 'drive select' worked on the RS6 preformance steeringwheel in a S6 C7, maybe in worse case repinning the wire in the wheel fixes it.

Anyway :)
