SD cards

Post by Emm_W » Sat Aug 01, 2015 11:55 pm

Hi, does anyone know which SD cards can be used in the RS6 MY 2014 with MMI+? Ideally I would like to have two 64 GB or 128 GB SD cards that also fit the MacBook Air 13" MY 2013, but I have no idea if those cards are compatible with the car as well. I've read somewhere that the cards must be formatted with the FAT32 format, but that format name makes me think it might be restricted to only support up to 32 GB... Thanks,

/Mark

My car was 2014:

And as you said it has to be formatted to FAT32 which restricts you to max 32gb SD Cards.

I don't know about any restrictions on the RS6, but you can format bigger cards to FAT32 using special software. My TV capture unit uses 64gb cards and they have to be formatted to FAT32 first so I know it can be done.

Seems i was wrong about FAT32:

So MikeFish & GLM may well be correct!

Thanks for input guys. I just bought a SanDisk Ultra SDXC 64 GB Class 10 card that I have now formatted to ExFAT (which is the only FAT format available in Apple DiskUtil), which I have read is the successor to FAT32 (vastly superseding the FAT32 32 GB limit). I will now try to copy a couple of iTunes folders onto it and then force feed the RS6 with it and see what happens... Will keep everyone posted.

(Up until now I have used the Bluetooth connection to automatically stream music from my iPhone as soon as I enter the car, but it would be even nicer to be able to use the two SD card slots so that my wife and I can have one card each for each other's music. :-)

I'd be very surprised if the RS6 will read the ExFAT format. Pretty sure you need to format the SD card to FAT32.
If you insist on using crApple computers then have a quick google for a program that will allow you to format 64gb SD cards in FAT32 using OSX. I know Windows doesn't support this natively but I know there are several free programs that allow you to do it.
Alternatively, if you have any devices that use SD cards and also require them to be foratted in FAT32 then chances are if you put an unformatted card in them they will format them for you. I'm pretty sure my mobile phone does this (micro SD only of course, but can put the micro Sd card in an SD card adapter).

I think the issue is that it costs a lot of money for companies to license products to use exfat (owned by Microsoft) so they chose to use FAT32 instead. FAT32 has a max filesize of 4gb so not really an issue for SD cards holding MP3s.

when i got my SD card i never touched the format of it - and using my coumputer (apple) copied the files over to the SD card from the itunes file to maintain the file structure and meta data. The only editing you need to do is to any playlist that you want to copy over.

Here is a good post with all the info:

Your choice for this is:

Max 32Gb SD card with a FAT32 filesystem.

Why not a 64gb card?
