Ceramic brake squeal- not cool! - update.

So I've had the rs ( a 14 plate with 13k mile) for nearly two weeks now and love it but the ceramic brakes sound unacceptably f*ckin awful!

Under medium to hard braking they are superb & silent stoppers but low speed squeal is terrible. My '997t with ceramic used to occasionally make a little noise, but not even 10% of the Rs.

It's like a giant running tin finger nails down a blackboard!!!.

The previous owner (a mate) warned me about it and told me that it had been into audi but no fault was found.

I have it booked in to Audi on Thursday but it was so bad this morning that I went in to the dealership, hi-jacked a technician and took him round the block. He said that it wasn't right and that he's 'not happy with that noise'

So, I have a couple of questions please that may help me with my quest to get this hopefully rectified.

1- Has anybody else had this problem &, if so, what was the outcome
2- I understand that the facelift has a different ceramic set up?, if this true?

Any help would be really appreciated as this is dampening my enthusiasm for what is otherwise an absolutely amazing car.

Thanks in advance guys- I'm desperate,

Martin

Your best bet is to check the brake pad shims. Or copper grease on the back of the pads normally works

Copper slip isn't recommended these days due to abs sensors, but the correct grease should hopefully cure the squealing.

Thanks Andy & Chunk, will pass that onto Audi when it goes in but apparently they checked them last month when originally reported and they said everything was in order...

Dropped re to Audi tonight for the brakes- here's hoping a solution is found but, typically, it's not squealing !

Car went into audi collected the RS last week, they took pics of the brakes , returned the car and sent the pics off to Germany.

I called Saturday to say brakes squealing so bad I'd rather drive my van, they said Germany now want pics of the back of the discs as they hadn't removed the wheels the first time (God knows!).

Car recollected today and wheels removed for photos.

They found some hairline cracks in the front discs and some minor pitting on the rear pads- discs apparently fine all round.

Just waiting for Germany to authorise new pads and 'hopefully' that'll be the end of my only gripe with what is otherwise a beautiful car...

13k miles and cracks on the discs

Edit, or did you mean front pads?

Thanks Archie,

I've only just bought the car so not sure how it was driven before i.e bedding in period ect., however the body work is mint so no tell-tale signs of track use.

The car is still at Audi awaiting a decision from Germany regarding replacing pads.

They've had the main dealer check the vehicle electronics to ensure that its running standard tune- what that's got to do with the brakes God only knows.

I called audi UK customer services to say that I'm not impressed with the fact that the car cas now been off the road for three days to ironically be told that they would respond to my complaint within 72 hours! Triffic! Lol

There's no official bedding in process for ceramic brakes. When I collected my B8 with Ceramics, the dealer just told me to do a few gentle stops from 70ish to bed them in properly, but he said that the PDI includes this anyway, and it was just a precautionary measure
Nothing was put in writing and there's nothing in the handbook, so regardless of what procedure was followed (if any), Audi wouldn't have any grounds to use that to reject a claim. The only time they'll kick up a fuss is if the pads are showing signs of excess heat build up (i.e. it's been hammered on a track), but that' what they're designed for, and that's one of Audi's major selling points for such an expensive option

Regarding customer services at Audi uk. Every tom dick and harry has a important sounding job title there, but keep asking to escalate until you get to someone that isn't a pleb on the phone line. I have the top guys email address if you need it, so DM me

Finally sorted!...

Car was returned Friday with new front pads and no more squealing! :))

Brake pad sensor came up Friday night but Audi replaced sensors for me Saturday morning so all good.

Driven to Dms in Southampton this morning so first couple of hundred miles now covered :)

Thanks everyone for posting

Probably put some anti squeal lube on with the new pads. Glad it's sorted though, squealing brakes are a pain the the edwardo.

I need some of that for the next time I do Edwardo's missus, she's started attracting packs of howling dogs.
