Small numberplate?
Small numberplate?
Can anyone help me out, I have just recently bought a RS6 and I am wanting to put small number plates on front and back but what size can you have to still be legal and how do I go about the front plate with the plate surround do I just take that off all together or ?
Thanks

Re: Small numberplate?
You asked what size you could go to and still be legal. I think Smudge pretty much pointed you to the answer. The size you have got on right now is the smallest you can have; it's the only size that you are allowed on a post 2001 car. FWIW (probably nothing) I think a small plate is going to look lost in the middle of the singleframe grille and would probably act as a powerful Police Attention magnet.

Re: Small numberplate?
The above is legal from what I can make out. I've just had some smaller plates made up to allow marginally more airflow into the grille area.SSB wrote:https://scontent.cdninstagram.com/hphot ... 3113_n.jpg

The document attached is the bible on this and the extract for plates fitted post 2001 states...
1) Characters must be 79mm tall
2) Characters (except the number 1 or letter I) must be 50mm wide
3) The character stroke (the thickness of the black print) must be 14mm
4) The space between characters must be 11mm
5) The space between the age identifier and the random letters must be 33mm
6) The margins at the top, bottom and side of the plate must be 11mm
7) Vertical space between the age identifier and the random numbers must be 19mm
Numbers 1-5 all are to do with the font. 7 is to do with number plates with two rows of letters/numbers. So as long as you go with a road legal font then you are covered with those.
Only number 6 covers anything to do with number plate sizing and as such, as long as you have 11mm or more border around the letters you will be road legal. To meet the British standard you will also need
1) The British Standard number (currently BS AU 145d)
2) The name, trademark or other way of identifying the manufacturer or supplier
3) The name and postcode of the supplying outlet
So you can get plates as per the photo above and probably best to printout a copy of the leaflet posted above and keep in your glovebox in case you get pulled over.
In terms of attaching it to the number plate, you can buy something like this off ebay...
and just cut/dremel it down to a smaller size than the plate so it is hidden behind the plate and then fix that to the grille. Then just use the sticky pads/tape to attach your plate over it.

Re: Small numberplate?
Get a Japanese plate plinth as some of us have.
Then order a plate made to size.
There are loopholes regarding using a Swiss plate plinth, but its a loophole and involves an argument about Type Approval of the car and the plinth fitted. This means you can run no extra spaces, if needed for space and can use motorcycle size letters, as per the rules for 'imported' vehicles.
It been tested to its limits and the local police force backed down and would not take the issue to court.
Be warned though, this will be tested one day in a court and I hope it won't be me to test it!
You will have no excuses for the rear plate.
Cheers
PS If you fancy a chuckle read this, (especially 1.4 Blag) Its worth the read.
