Re: ordered prior to test drive

Post by Chesterfield » Mon Jun 30, 2014 6:50 pm

Am now considering dropping the dynamic pack and specifying the led lights on their own. I'm reading mixed reviews over the dynamic suspension and its suitability for UK roads. If its going to be left in comfort all the time, and I'm never going to track it or push it that hard all the time, then I see little point.

Its going to be used at least three days a week taking kids to school, off to work and maybe occasionally at weekends for a spirited drive. Would I be correct in thinking the standard air suspension would suit these requirements and give that bit of luxury wafting when on the motorways?

Can you still set the various things like gear box changes etc if you don't spec the dynamic package?

Any thoughts?

I've not read any reviews that have DRC as a compromise.

You still get Audi drive Select and the suspension is adjustable.

Have you not driven both flavours?

Nope, not driven either version. I'm hopefully getting an extended test drive toward the end of July, but I've been advised I'll have to get my final spec sorted before then as it wont be able to be changed come mid July. The benefits and drawbacks of being able to drop on a slot that became available in the queue I guess.

I've had a firm ride in the F430 before, and I'm guessing that in its sport mode would be akin to the RS6 in dynamic with DRC. Not something I would like every day. I currently have air suspension on the Range Rooney, and for daily driving I like its softness, so that's got me thinking that maybe air would be fine for my needs, as the firmest setting on that may suit my requirements for any spirited driving.

For those that have driven both, would there be any overlap in the two would you say? I.e. would dynamic in the air version be anything like comfort in the DRC?

They aren't that far apart. Dynamic in air is too stiff for road. Optimal, for me, was comfort on DRC, with 21s.

That said, it's nothing like a RR. On any level.

Dealer hasn't got a car now?

I've driven both......its a personal choice but I chose air because in Dynamic mode it is as lively as I want it to be but the big difference is that in 'comfort' its lovely and smooth, reminiscent of my xfr.
I found that in the C7 test car I took out it was still jittery on the comfort setting and in Dynamic it was almost undriveable on British roads.

Interesting, I took a DRC car in dynamic over the rumbles at Millbrook and was surprised that my teeth didn't fall out. Still too stiff for most roads but way better than the C6 was in sport.

For me it's not a car to waft around in, I do not want to roll in the corners and that's where DRC is way better.

Guess its horses for courses doodlebug. Its the sheer versatility of this car that sealed the deal for me. Sometimes I collect clients from Heathrow so I switch to comfort for their benefit and almost without exception I get compliments about the smoothness of the ride. Then on the way home on my own, its back to dynamic mode, sports exhaust barking away on the downshifts and I'm happy as a pig in sh*t.

As you said, it's personal choice. And for me that's where I think it's important to sample both flavours. It's an expensive punt otherwise, even with advice and others' opinion.

Unfortunately no the dealer has not got a car in now. They are soiurcing one from Audi for a test drive, but I don't know what setup that will have.

I shall be asking the dealer whether there is anything can be done about delaying until after a drive.

Other dealers do have them in, but not the same group as my local one. I could always just pop to one of those and "have a go", but I didn't think it fair to those dealers if I'm ordering from my local one. I would be wasting their time. I wouldn't appreciate it so I didn't think they would either.

I'm amazed your local or their group doesn't have one. You should have the opportunity to drive both. Lead time isn't crazy unless you add ceramics or go exclusive, so you could cancel and order when you've test driven.

My local dealer didn't have a demo RS6 either.....but when I said I'd order one subject to a satisfactory test drive, they had one delivered from another dealer (in the same group) for the next day.

I have been so pleased with my new RS6, my only regret was that I didn't add more options (I've got sports exhaust, rearview camera, side assist, HUD, air suspension, privacy glass, advanced key,pan am roof, aluminium styling pack) I enquired last week about part exchanging for a higher spec but was kindly told to wait until April/May when the RS6 gets Laser lights.

That works both ways though, if the facelift does appear then they'll not be offering the same discounts. The dealers are unlikely to really know about the facelift schedule at this juncture.

As I understand it, laser lights are not mass market material, that's from Audi's own material, so could be that they remain limited run for R8.

yep agreed about being a bit early for facelift specs but I spoke to another Audi dealership Principal at Goodwood yesterday and he also told me that Lasers will be fitted next year to RS6's.
Ref the discount deals, I couldn't get more than £3K from anywhere unless I took out a finance package. I was tempted to try Broadspeed but had such good service from the dealer I stuck with them.

Take the finance, get the massive discount, pay it back when you've walked out. Win win.

I'm mercenary I'll buy the car from the dealer that offers the best deal. Thus far that's never my local.
