£ 21" Wheel

Post by FaisalJ » Tue Jun 27, 2017 10:00 am

My wife hasn't driven the RS again since she kerbed 3x new wheels in a month. She has her own car now - I reckon I must've broken even on saved repair bills by now!

My wife managed to do both offside alloys and tyres in one go on her SQ5, I am dreading her in the RS6 when it arrives, but have gone for surround and hope it may just save the day.

I wouldn't want my partner driving my kids round in a Yaris.
Not much space in the back between rear seats and the front of a car if they rear end you

I think his comment was tongue-in-cheek

This thread makes for painful reading. Sounds like for some of you, it would be cheaper to rent a girl for a few nights a week.

My missis wants an R8 or a 991 turbo so she can drive them...err I don't think so.
I've purposely not put spacers on my car to protect them from kerb rash!!

Bizarre. I am not into stereotyping women drivers, but my wife has knobbled the same nearside rear wheel three times now. Last time she did a grand job of it and the wheel needs a serious refurbishment.

She sort of cuts off left-handed corners in tight places like car parks and on tight street corners.

The first two times I kept pretty quiet, but the last time I went ballistic, telling her it was lazy use of the steering wheel when she said it wasn't her fault. Took days for normality to return and the amazing thing was that it was, after all, my fault, although I still can't figure out how (something to do with me chatting from the passenger seat when she needed to concentrate).

Women and kerbs eh  My missus smashed into a kerb on Friday night, kerbed the wheel badly, tyre was a write off but she still managed to get it home. Come through the door crying about the wheel and the tyre. Wheel was changed with a new tyre first thing Saturday morning. Saturday afternoon, she done the EXACT same thing to the opposite wheel and tyre, big chunk out the wheel and the tyre and an instant flat.

I was actually speechless at the stupidity, I never said a word to her or I no doubt would have been murdered

Anyway, looking at that sidewall in your pic, yep, that tyre needs changing. The RS6 is a big heavy car and those tyres come under a lot of stress. As to whether you need to change the other one with 5mm remaining, Hmm. In theory and for what's best, I'm sure you know the answer. In practical and reality, tough one to justify. Measure the other two tyres to see if there's a better match available, one may be at 7, the other at 6. Pair the new 8 and 7 together and the 5 and 6 together. It would be very minimal difference.
Agree with Leo but also be very careful with the centre diff. The Workshop manual specifies a max of 2mm difference between the average tyre depth of front and rear axles

Thanks guys for the input!

Interesting fact about the 2mm difference in the workshop manual.

I measured the depth and it is between 6.0 to 6.5mm across all tyres. Given that a new tyre normally has around 8.5mm, I should be safe.

She has a seat Leon cupra currently but would like ME to buy a proper sports car and then I use the Leon for work...
I'm tempted tbh :-)
But I'm not sure i could rest knowing she was pottering about in something like that. Her cupra is like a dustbin
