Suggest you get a Snickers bar and then go for a manicure or the like! :biggrin2:

I have emailed Continental asking about the effectiveness of the Tyre sealer on Cont-Silent tyres and if there is the potential for any out of balance affect. I'll update when/if I get a reply.

I got a response from the technical team at Continental Tyres UK:

"Thank you for your email, I appreciate your concerns.

The type of foam used in a form of polyurethane foam chosen for its acoustic properties, but it does not work like a sponge. The foam drains liquids, if you pour a litre of water on the foam it will drain out the edges of the foam and you would almost get a litre back! without pressing the foam, The structure or matrix of the foam will allow the latex to penetrate also and get to a source of a puncture, as you also have 1.0mm of seal under the foam this will also help in fixing a puncture but it will not flow with the foam on like the 3mm seal does in tyres on its own.

So I feel the products are fit for purpose and compliment each others performance attributes
"

Not sure exactly what I make of it. It sounds like normally the sealant gunk seals the puncture and then distributes (by driving) the rest of the contents building up a 3mm layer of sealant over the entire inner surface of the tyre which eventually goes off forming a skin. It seems like there is an acknowledgement that the foam interferes with this build up but is not viewed as an issue? Opinions?

I don't ever want to use the sealant gunk, however if it was necessary for me to do so then I'd want to be 100% confident that it would get me out of a tricky situation!

"but it will not flow with the foam on like the 3mm seal does in Tyres on its own"

This is a contradiction. How can it work if it can not flow.

That response certainly does not inspire me with any confidence at all.

My plans tomorrow are to push for a swap out onto michelins. I don't even mind paying towards a swap out I think I should pay for 1 and Audi pay for 3 and they can keep my contis to stick on trade cars.

My reasons being lack of confidence with tyre weld and lack of availability of replacement.

Wish me luck.

as usual, some very informative posts on here, but guys help me out-just about to go on a 2k mile trip,France,Switzerland,Italy blah blah, you've made me nervous, are we saying that these tyres are one offs and you can't get hold of them-I have a March registered C7 2015-if you get a puncture,is it covered under the Audi breakdown cover for instance. Also ,sorry to bring up the old torque steer thread again, but do you think these tyres have anything to do with that--does the sound strip make the tyre more compressible,if you get my drift ( excuse the pun !!! )Again the communication from Audi is not great,is it,we should have been told about the tyres at the time of purchase, especially if you can't get hold of the damn things and most crucially, does the gunk work--is there anything in the hand book about this--suppose I should have a look !!! yawn help put my mind at rest.

I'd assume this is purely one of those 'you'll never notice the difference' options.

Surely if it's purely noise lessening foam then you can fit the non noise lessening version of the tyre if required & still be fully compliant.

I'm sure Audi like Porsche, BMW & Mercedes have their own sudo OEM tyres & they're only distinguishable by some random letters/numbers at the end of the tyre designation. No car has true OEM tyres as the Mfctr swaps & changes dependent on costs/supply.

Rather than use the slime/sealant (which more often than not is useless even on normal non-noise reducing tyres) there are these:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Silverline-Tyre ... B001QUN9UQ

I've not had to use them myself, but friends have and swear by them. Also, a lot of fitters get funny about repairing tyres that have used the canisters as they cant be bothered to wash the tyre out and clean it so that you get an area where the repair will adhere well enough. But given you have three years of cover on an Audi with RAC, rather than mess about trying to patch holes, personally, i would just call them to either take the car back to a fitter or send a mobile one out.

You can get approved contis that are non contisilent ones and both seem pretty available to me which are all labelled as 'OEM' (RO1) - can get them fitted within 2 days. Obviously, that doesn work for almoRS as he needed two Dunlops to match the otherside of the car hence the delay.

As for the foam making the tyres more prone to squirming - i would be doubtfull as the foam is attached to the inside of the carcass, whereas any squiriming would be impacted by the construction of the sidewall as well as the grip/tread which should really be no different to a normal tyre. Aslo, the density of the foam sounds like it willmake negliable impact ont he inflation of the tyre to impact pressures.

I think you would have a hard time convincing a Dealer to swap out tyres if they are rated for Audi cars - specifically if they are for that model - given you have the RAC cover, which is ultimately the back up for the canister of sealant. Swapping the tyres will not guarantee that the sealant will work and you're back to using the RAC anyway, as well as making a mess of the inside of the wheel.

Well well. Sitting in Audi reception waiting for them to do my puncture. Long discussion about all our views.
As all our thoughts TBH they are not prepared to swap out my tyres as they say michelins are not R01 and would supply them but it would most probably affect my insurance. The main concern being the tyre weld has melted away also as tech guy said don't bother using it and just call Rac. They'll take my car to nearest Audi garage world wide that is (10biscuits) and if they can't fix or replace at Audi they'd give me a courtesy car until it was.
Tech guy agreed that a better knowledge of these tyres should be broadcasted more especially to us end users and I'd say here at Stratford Audi it will happen. So all in all I'm happy for now.
Ps I've had a snickers bar before I got here.

Thanks GLM for this.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Silverline-Tyre ... B001QUN9UQ

I've placed my order and it's what my tyre fitter used on Saturday on the C7 which I've had experience of use before on my Q7. It's a way better option that the tyre weld.
I'm going to throw out the tyre weld and put this in the boot instead.

I asked all the questions that have been bought up in this thread and Audi's replies are:

No the foam will not induce torque steer
No the tyre weld is of no use although it MAY work. But recommended to call breakdown instead.
No if you do use the tyre weld in will not affect the TPMS as the tyre weld can just be cleaned of the sensor and be reused.
Only 5 manufacturers do this size tyre Dunlop/conti/ Pirelli/ yoko and michelins. But the latter 2 are not R01 and first 3 are all silent type. And more information about these tyres should be broadcasted to end users. Ie: us.
If I want michelins fitted I can but check with insurance company. Audi have no issues with fitting them and would not affect any warranty issues.

I hope I've helped in some way.

Yours
