RS6 Headlight Bulb

Post by tonybolony70 » Sun Dec 03, 2023 3:36 pm

So the Headlamp bulb (main) on my C7 RS6 is out, so obviously i need to change this , so i have 2 questions ,
1 what type of bulb is in it (pretty sure there the standard bulbs that came in the car), and is there a better version i could use that's still plug and play? , the actual bulb that needs replacing is the driver side (UK car)

2 is there a guide for replacing the headlamp bulb, as i dont seem to be able to find any info

thanks in advance for any help

If you have a bulb in the headlight unit then it isn't LED and thus it is likely to be an identical unit to that fitted to same-era A6 cars. I would suggest checking on the A6 forum as there is a lot of info there, much of which is directly applicable to the RS6.

If yours has xenons which a few RS6's did then yes you can replace the bulb- D3S if not then you have full led headlights which are sealed units and no access to leds to change. Do check your fuses on the drivers side iirc for the headlights

ok without sounding thick i have no idea on my headlight type, went in via the airbox , i can see the indicator bulb, then another bulb next to it which i have taken out (H7) bulb , then next to that is a sealed unit which is where that big round part of the light is almost like a camera lens , thats what doesnt light up, and neither does the H7

Easiest way to check the bulb is to swap the xenon bulb form the other side to this one and test it. Still no joy would then mean testing the control units again by swaping from other headlight. Again check fuses as well just to be sure

so looking inside the engine bay after removing the airbox i see there is very little access if any at all to remove backplate that holds the Xenon in so am i right in thinking its a bumper off, or is there another way ?

I have LEDs so have no experience of changing the headlight lamp however this should help - ELSA win shows this for lamp replacement for C7.5 and C7 RS6s:
