activating wifi client mode in the MMI

Post by tmg » Mon Sep 07, 2020 11:09 am

Hi

I've just returned to the fold with a 2016 PE.

one thing that is annoying me is the ability to get the car online. either a phone in rsap mode (lets party like its 1999) or a separate sim (lets party like this was developed by people who have never actually been in the real world) or this e-sim thing which is from what I can see just a faff and in any case doesnt work where I live.

i believe its possible to activate a wifi client mode on the MMI, which would let it connect to a separate hotspot (i.e my phone) which would make this all much better.

I've had a poke around with VCDS and taken a look at a few bits that have worked on various a4/5s but have not been able to find anything yet for the a6 platform.

anyone had a go at this or better yet get it working?

I had it working all the time. I don't think you can use a phone to do it though (someone may correct me there). I thought it was only possible on cars that had the Connect option. This involved the addition of a SIM car slot between the SD cards. I assume you have this as you mentioned a separate SIM. Beyond that, there is an option to turn it on or off in the MMI as well as configuring the wifi passcode.
Are you able to connect to the wifi but not actually get any internet? Or not even able to see the wifi on a device?
Are the other online features available i.e. google maps and google search with your SIM card in?
I assume you have data on the SIM card? What SIM card are you using? When I used to put a new EE SIM card in, it would allow me to get online until it was registered. This involved connecting my phone or tablet to the car via the wifi then opening a web browser at which point it would redirect me to the EE log in page. You don't need to log in though, just scroll down and click the register this SIM and then it should allow the car to use the data after that point.

ah

what I mean is that I dont want to use the esim/sim card slot/rsap stuff.

i want to use another wifi hotspot (my phone) and have the MMI connect to that. I've seen this option in other audi MMIs, and wondering if anyone knows how to enable it (or even if its possible) to turn on the wifi client on the MMI

I didn't think that was possible on the C7. Are the Audis you have seen it on all newer models i.e. later than the C7 platform which was introduced circa 2011?

If you have the Connect option then just get a cheap data SIM card and shove it in. Works very well and doesn't cost a lot. It will work in the same areas that your phones works but have the advantage of having a better aerial than a phone in your pocket.
