Handbrake automatic activation.

Post by Paul T. » Mon Feb 10, 2020 3:38 pm

Hi,

I have a 2012 A6 Avant and the handbrake comes on automatically when the ignition is switched off - Great!

I have a 2014 RS6 Avant and the hand brake does not activate automatically, which is a pain.

Any ideas on how I get the handbrake to come on automatically when leaving the RS6, please?

TIA.

Paul.

Thank you.

I can't recall ever pressing that on the standard A6.
I've just had a press in the RS6 and I think it is something to do with auto-release of the hand brake.

I thought perhaps it was something that may be dealt with by coding.

Time for me to RTFM I think.

I seem to recall there was an option for this with VCDS and I activated it but it made no difference.

That button with the A on it applies the brake when you are stationary and press the brake pedal hard and stops you rolling forward when you release the brake and will only work if you have your seat belt on. This is not the same as automatic handrake activation.

Thanks, Mike.

I seem to recall reading or hearing it could be done by coding.
It would be great if someone had the answer. :)

Perhaps I'm getting mixed up with coding for boot closure by keyfob which is there on my BiTDi but not on the RS6. :(

Thanks again.

Boot closure is definitely possible with coding.

When Auto Hold is on and whenever you’re stopped with your foot on the brake hard enough for it to pop up with the green P symbol, put the car in park and whenever the drivers seatbelt is undone or ignition is turned off it should automatically apply the handbrake. However this is on my fathers MY15 FL which may be different.

Thanks, Jamie.

I have seen a YouTube video that show auto-handbrake on (and also auto-tailgate closing) being programmed using (I think) VCDS.

I suspect you fathers car and my standard A6 may have had this sort of thing programmed at the factory or afterwards.

My 2017 RS6 is in at the dealership at the moment and I asked if the auto handbrake or tailgate closing from the keyfob possibly could be done and judging by the response of the service receptionist, I'm not sure I'll get a result.
