Hi all,

I have an intermittent misfire. It has happened 3 times in the last month or so, EPC light on and engine light flashing. Each time, I can pull over restart the engine and all is fine.

The error is logged as a P0306 'Cylinder 6 misfire detected'.

I 'could' book this into Audi under extended warranty BUT I am thinking I will just get the cylinder 6 ignition coil replaced at my specialist in the first instance. Plugs were replaced 15K miles ago.

Do you think this is sensible action? The fact that it is fine once restarted is telling me it is nothing 'serious'?

Any advice greatly received!

Not sure what falls under extended warranty...but if decent checkup falls under it you might want to let audi have a look at it.
Misfires are so uncommon on these blocks, actually maybe 'hidden' (less then 100 per xxx cyclus don't count as a recorded MIL misfire), but actual logged misfires on a specific cylinder is not so common and worth inspecting. Not sure how many miles on your car, but the coils don't really go bad that fast. If the car is stock, plugs don't suffer so much and should still be okey.

*how is your oil consumption? I don't want to scare you but there are a few cases of stuck oil scrap piston rings that damaged the cylinderwall and caused compression/oil and other related issues that lead to misfires on a specific cylinder. In short, don't go too lightly over a dash mil misfire code. Definatly compair the misfire count with the other cylinders and let somebody look into it.

Hi Dasquade and thanks...

Car is a stock 64 plate and I bought it in June this year @24Kmiles and it has now done 29K. Oil level still shows max on the display and I have never had to top it up.

The warranty wont cover spark plugs and they will most likely charge me for the diagnostics and I have £250 XS. So I am thinking for £100 it might be worth just changing that one ignition coil?!

Its the fact that as soon as I restart, all works fine. My thinking is that if it was something serious then it wouldn't just go away for a few weeks and then come back, so it could well be an electrical item i.e ignition coil?

Will my indy be able to see the misfire count, and what am I looking for here? i.e what is a good sign and what is bad??

Well fact is you can't go wrong with swapping a coil from one cylinder onto an other or buying 1 new one and log it. Sadely it involves some building out parts (forgot where cylinder 6 is, i think left side/airfilter side).
Yes normally your indy can long the misfires, you have per cylinder two values...total ammount and total amount x100 (or something like that). Could be after start it is behaving itself and not misfiring enough to activate the treshold, but most likely it will have a big number. Write them down and compair after several miles/days that will more easlier identify throuble shooting cylinders (basic investigating though and in case it is just spark plug/coil related).

I plan to change the coil this week and will update in a few weeks... problem being that it is intermittent so will have to wait a while to see if it comes back (but will also check out the logs to see if the count on this cylinder reduces)..

For what it is worth, get yourself a mobile carscanner/reader like obd11. It is obd dongle and app on phone. You can do the misfire logging yourself (one trip to the dealer/indy and it has payed for itself already).

Hi, I have got the Carista dongle... Do you know if you can you see the misfire logging with there app?? OR is there another app that I can use with this dongle??

So did a google and downloaded OBD Auto Doctor and this shows the misfire counts.
Interestingly tho' it shows cylinder 8 having more counts than 6 (the others have very low or 0).

I am no engineer, but maybe 'some' misfires are normal and the ECU 'manages' these...??
But because it flagged an error with Cylinder 6 (when the EPC light came on, and the car ran rough) then I still plan to change the ignition coil on 6 and we will see how it goes...

You’d be much better off just taking car into an indy / VAG tuning place, have a chat and have a diagnostic report carried out..then it’s done rather than Q and A on a forum, it’ll be an hour or twos labour at most !

Yeah, its going in tomorrow. But I am unsure what more they will be able to see as I don't believe it will show up if a specific ignition coil is at fault but will see tomorrow.

Quick update....

Ignition coil replaced but sadly didn't fix the problem.

It was still coming up with Cylinder 6 misfire and also something to do with exhaust actuator on cylinder 8. Car is now back at Audi so will update when I have some news, 'hopefully' nothing too serious as it is an intermittent fault ...

All sorted (fingers crossed). Turned out to be the 'Exhaust Camshaft Valve Adjuster'??!!

and I must say absolutely great service from Harrogate Audi... total cost was £125!! Result!

Apparently this part was causing the issue on Cylinder 8 which was then having a knock on effect on cylinder 6???!!

Its been fine for over a week now, but you watch, as soon as I post this, the error will come back

Hmm, how did you figuered it out? I know the camshaft and knock can be tested, did it threw a faultcode of the camshaft?
Reading it was only a 125£ repair it sounds it was an easy fix and not something inside the engine (where the camshaft is located).
Any details if possible would be much appreciated as there are several guys with misfires without faultcodes....

Yeah, I was expecting at least £250 (which is my warranty excess), but because the fix was under that they suggested going out of warranty and they also 'waived' the diagnostics fee (which initially they said they would charge if I chose not to go ahead OR if the part was not covered under warranty.

I am sure it is a small part and easy to get to, but I don't know the exact details other than the faults were as mentioned above (and on VCDS is said something along the lines of 'Cylinder 8 Exhaust valve actuator' and the part on the invoice is:

Exhaust Camshaft Valve Adjuster - A06E 103 697 L (which I assume is the part number). Cost is £27.69 with £76.59 which I am assuming is the labour (both + vat).

I hope this is of help to someone.
