Looking to buy
Hi all,
New to the site and just want to get some advice before taking the plunge.
Need to get something bigger as we have a first child on the way. Currently have a Mk3 Focus RS running stage 2 which I absolutely love but if anybody has ever looked in the boot you’ll understand why the bigger car is needed (it loses half its boot to the 4WD system). It will only be a weekend car as the RS currently is and I’m wanting something that can do all of the family stuff and then have a blast now and then.
I have loved the RS6 for a number of years now. Just think it has so much presence and love the wide arches. As it will only be a weekend car and the other half will be using it now and again as well, I didn’t know if it was more sensible for an RS4 with it being a little smaller but I went to test drive a 2014 one at the local Audi dealer and it was nice but only nice, didn’t really amaze me and actually felt quite slow compared to my RS.
With only having around £40k budget I also thought that’s not really enough to get a nice example of an RS6. I know I would only be going for pre-facelift but didn’t want one with silly miles that could end up costing me a fortune. I was also conscious of having to sell my car private first because an Audi dealer isn’t likely to give me a good PX price.
This is where the predicament comes. One of my local Ford dealers has a 63 plate RS6 with only 36k miles for sale which makes things a lot easier because they will probably give me a fairer PX valuation. Looks like a really nice car but can’t tell from the pictures all the extras that it has/hasn’t got apart from the obvious ones. The down side of the car is it’s had 8 owners? When I’m buying a used car the amount of owners is usually well down on my list of priorities but this does seem quite high? It also doesn’t have a full Audi history but I am told it’s a mix of main dealers, Audi specialists and the Indy dealers that have had it for sale. Worth pointing out that I have made them aware that if I’m buying it I will want at least 3 months full warranty to give me a little peace of mind. I am due to go and have a look at the car and take it for a test drive and will go through everything there but just want opinions on it or even better if anyone knows the car?

Sorry for the essay on a first post but just looking on some general opinions of firstly taking the plunge and going for an RS6, secondly whether I should stay away with only a £40k budget and either save some more of look at something different and then the opinion on the car in the link.
Thanks all

Re: Looking to buy
Welcome along.
First thing to say is that whilst it’s bottom end in pricing it’s still a 90k car with the costs that this brings. You would want warranty long term not for three months. Preferably you want the Audi warranty.
It’s a pretty vanilla spec car based on the blurb, there’s little to go on.
It appears to have the carbon fibre front and rear splitters, I couldn’t determine whether the mirrors were carbon too. Add the LED headlights and that looked to be it for options. With the VIN you’d be able to check the spec.
This is an early launch car, though that’s still a lot of owners so I’d definitely want to dig into that.
If budget is tight you would be better looking for an S6 or newer S4.

Firstly FON!
Secondly - Welcome to the forum
Thirdly - Congrats on the expected new arrival!
My personal opinion on the car. Low mileage for the age, but also limited additional spec. Looks like it originally had the silver trim without the Quattro grill and this has been added afterwards (roof rails and window trim is silver). In fact the front bumper has a gloss black and what looks like a PE titanium grey vertical piece in the bumper. These should be the same so the front of the car has seen some 'action'.
It has the reverse parking camera and the optional 21" wheels. Only the mileage seems to be driving the price. With higher miles I would expect a lower price than £40K.
In addition to the aftermarket trim it looks like it is wearing spacers.
8 previous owners would set off alarm bells. It could have a problem that keeps being passed...
Low mileage for the age means it's not been driven a huge amount. 6K miles on average per year is either a lot of small journeys (which the RS6 hates) or few long journeys. With previous owners it could be a mix. Attractive mileage but I wouldn't be afraid to buy into one with more miles at that age. These cars eat miles.
In honesty I would avoid.
For similar money the one in the link looks like a cleaner possibly less abused example:
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified ... UDI&page=1
On the face of it, it's not a great spec either, but it is a 2015 FL car has the 20" wheels which don't suffer from the buckling the 21" wheels do. Looks like its in good condition and it's from a main dealer which may make life easier long term particularly if you have any issues as you will have more comeback. The only thing against it is the mileage. But that strikes me as the reason it's being sold by the previous owner. For me that is where my money would go.
Ensure you get a warranty as well as if these car's have issues it can be pricey.
Plus, get some sleep - you're going to need it!
Hope that helps!

Re: Looking to buy
Thanks for the replies. Going to view the car and test drive to see if I definitely want to get one and see if this one is worth the punt. From speaking to the dealer quickly on the phone I think I will be able to get the price down to around the £37k mark and I think I will be able to get around £1k more for my RS than I was expecting from a PX deal which makes it more favourable if I do like this one.
Thanks for pointing out the bumper. I’ve done the HPi and all is clean but I’ll give the front end a thorough check.
Did think of a newer S6 but they don’t really do it for me. Think I would prefer another marque estate if I decide I haven’t got enough for the type of RS6 that I want.
And currently in Rhodes sunning it up so getting plenty of extra sleep in before the arrival! Haha

Re: Looking to buy
Holiday before the arrival sounds like a good plan!
Things to look out for on the test drive:
-Any kind of vibration through the steering wheel - could be sign of a buckled wheel
-See if / how much the brakes squeak. Plus check the brakes over for life left and if there is any evidence of warping / lips on the disc. See if you can get them swapped out if they are the originals as they will probably be ready for a change.
-Service history - oil changes should be ideally done every 9K miles or 12 months whichever comes first. Also check that if the diffs have had an oil change as these will be due very soon at 39k miles. Not massively expensive but another £200 to get done at a specialist.
-See what the throttle response is like - shouldn't be any hesitation or feeling of lag
-See if there are any misfires from the engine. Check if plugs have been changed as these may need to have been done in it's lifespan. PE is after 2 years.
-The car looks lowered. I would expect it's on air suspension - will be able to check from the drive select - individual setting. See if the dealer knows what the story is.
With the age and spec plus the 'dodgy' front end it definitely needs to be less than £40K - a lot less! Too many good cars out there snapping at it's heals...
All the best with it and enjoy parenthood!

It’s got Carbon quatrro grill,
Black aftermarket lower lip spoiler,
Wrapped / gloss black front splitter,
Wrapped / gloss black front grill.
Parts can easily be swapped out to people’s tastes and some look better than original.
As long as the cars condition and history are verified before sale a few bits of plastic to to the front end would hardly put most off.

Re: Looking to buy
would steer well clear of this,
Problem with RS6 is they have held their price well, too well as can't see how the 18 month old cars are still 60k plus, when they were early 70s new ( after discount).
As others have said, RS6 out of warranty could be ruinous and hence you would want warranty through your ownership.
For your budget I wouldn't consider a RS6. If you are looking for performance and some practicality at your budget I would look at the F10 M5 ( your budget is going to get you in a BMW approved comp pack easily), the F10 is a performance car bargain at the moment.
here's on £34k - comp pack, CCBs

Or a F80 M3.
I had a 6 year old and a new born when I had my F10 with no practicality issues, so unless you have to have the estate

Re: Looking to buy
Hi MrFlattery....
I have read what others have said and agree on some points, but I would not rule it out....On the face of it, I think it looks a fair price for the mileage... But yes the number of owners is of concern and the mismatched trim and the fact that it doesnt have full Audi Service history, as it would only have been serviced a couple to 3 times with that mileage (providing its on flexible servicing)... It would be good if you could find out all the options and also how long the previous owner had it for... I think the HPI should show this?!
Also you can check on Audi site to see if its eligible for an Audi Approved Warranty... IF it is then that could be worth considering and used as a bargaining tool as it will cost circa £1.5K for the year and would be worth having to give piece of mind....
ALSO - If you are thinking of owning for long term then that is good, but if short term then that would obvs make it 9 owners and harder to move on....
So for me, if you can get Audi Warranty, and planning to keep it for a good while and it drives well and everything seems to stack up (check the service history) then go for it!
But like others have said there are other cars out there so this one would have to be gotten for a bit of a bargain...
Good luck and keep us posted!
Lig.

Re: Looking to buy
Just checked, and you can get Audi approved warranty on it £1600 full component cover, no excess, 10K mileage a year limit ... BUT it would have to be unmodified, so remove those spacers and make sure it hasn't been re-mapped!!

Re: Looking to buy
Again thanks for the responses and quite good and interesting to hear a mixture of opinions. For now I’m just going to take a look at it and like I said take for a drive because it could be that I like it so much that even if I don’t want this one I still have my heart set on getting one and maybe open up the budget a touch more.
Stash21 I had the same thoughts on prices right now and I’m also wondering if that means that there will be a fairly imminent fall in prices especially with the new model due out. I’m not naive to think that whatever car I have won’t depreciate (unless it’s some form of classic) but I don’t want it to be silly, so I am keeping this in mind for any RS6’s at the moment. Interesting with the choice on the M5 as an alternative as I’ve not really thought of one whereas I have the M3 but I have a dog as well. Need to suss out if I will ever have him in the nicer weekend car as he doesn’t go in the RS currently (but that’s partly because the boot is too small) and if we do take him out I just use the daily commuter. That would make the need for an estate a lot less.
I have looked at some of the Audi Dealer RS6’s but as I said, I wouldn’t get the PX value for mine that I would need in order to buy at dealer prices. But again if I drive this one and get the bug for it then the plan will be to stick the RS up for sale privately and then having the cash in my pocket for the right one.
Audi Approved Warranty sounds good! Or it at least sounds like a tool I can use to get an additional £1600 off the asking price! Is there any way of me checking myself if it’s ever been remapped? And with Audi would the spacers mean they blanket refuse any claim or just the parts that they believe will be effected by the spacers? I only ask to get an idea of what they are like with claims etc.
Thanks again
