Has the engine failure put folk off these cars now then?
Whilst that won't help, most buyers will be oblivious. The issue, if there is one, is the volume of cars sold in the market with cheap finance and Audi support resulting in piles of cars being pushed back in to the market as soon as folk hit their three years.

I'm with you on the - 'whoah, I'm paying as much on my cars as on a mortgage' front. I've been in this position too and the only thing I'd say (not knowing your circumstances of course), is maybe just engineer in a trip or two in the car to fall back in love with it.

Are you driving it too much as part of the daily routine? As cross country blast with some time during the weekly commute driving a shed may just give it a different perspective. At the moment, the losses are only on paper.

Not put me off really - a little nervous when reading horror stories but my warranty runs out in December and there is as much risk as far as I can tell with std cars...
If they are gonna go I'd guess a good safe map wouldn't contribute too much to current failures.

I'm possibley going back to GT / sports car although having just done my 160mile commute to work it was a great place to be in a jam on the M1/M25...

That's fair enough. I'd be a little concerned even if I had warranty, cause it's all the saftness of not having your car and then possible niggles after rebuild.
The do look and sound like a nice motor, hope to be able to purchase one some day.

Most of my daily grind is stuck in M-Way traffic but then there's a good 10 mins of back road blasting which always puts a smile on my face. Don't get me wrong..I absolutely love the car it is hands down the best one I've ever owned. When/if it goes then I'll miss it like crazy but it is purely the monthly outgoings. I've gone from contracting to full time employment and so get the same wages every month and a considerable amount (too much) is going on the car. I'd rather have some extra ££ to do with what I want plus still have something tasty on the drive.

false economy

the money you will lose changing cars you may as well keep this one until you've paid off a bit more

otherwise, sell privately for max, and step out of the expensive car game for a while - particularly on finance.

otherwise you'll find yourself in a downward spiral otherwise and spunking money left right and centre

Exit Stage Left?

Post by stevo55 » Mon Jul 03, 2017 6:29 pm

Worst car I lost money on was my old BMW Z4M-bought new fully loaded at £46k in 2006. Missed the new rule where you can hand the car back after paying half the value by a month...and boy did that bite me in the arse.
Was working overseas so the car sat on the drive most of the year and was paying £712 a month plus insurance etc. 2008 comes and I get spanked by the recession. Car was stuck in horrendous negative equity and at its worst BMW offered me £13k trade in. Car had about 12k on the clock by then.
After 4 years I sold the car for £19k with the same on the clock-a bloke bit my arm off he got a top deal. Then just for a brucie bonus I had to give BMW another £5k to clear finance. I didn't own another car for nearly 3 years after that.
So yes I totally get the false economy angle-If I have to shell out thousands to get clear then that torpedoes the 'save money' angle and it's pointless. Will see what Tootle says (been offered £62k for all you Nay Sayers on here) but likely it'll be a private sale or keep it unless a dealer works a good enough deal in. If I keep the car for longer then so be it....it's hardly a bad to car to be 'stuck' with.

Ha ha for sure! Frantic car very TVR like and a screamer of an engine. Some BMWs are money spinners-Z8 worth double its original price, 1M getting that way as well. We'll almost always lose money on cars it's just one of those things. Mind you I got money back when I sold the C6 so that was a nice surprise.

I'm trying really hard to be sensible too. But jesus the Golf R is boring. really f$%king dull. I was warned though - specifically on here.

It's even harder knowing that cars such as these are left all alone at night, without somebody to care for them:
