If it's a clear film there should be no issues, technically if you colour change you have to notify the DVLA.

I think I read if it's a colour change wrap you don't tell the DVLA, only for permanent colour changes.

If it's a clear film there should be no issues, technically if you colour change you have to notify the DVLA. Is your dealer insinuating they'd void the paint warranty for having a film applied? Never heard of that, my local franchise suggest it for something better than Lifeshine

I mentioned it to them and both Dealer and Finance girl simultaneously mentioned to check if it voids the paint warranty. If you've never heard of it then maybe it's just never cropped up before or nobody has realised? It's certainly something I had never considered, along with informing the DVLA. I would rather they mentioned than not.

MikeFish is right, until recently though. I checked online and all I can find is a statement that several Companies who provide wrapping services have posted on their webpages:
The register maintained by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) essentially exists to assist in revenue collection, road safety and law enforcement. The police and other enforcement agencies rely on the DVLA record for all vehicle-related investigations. It is therefore paramount that the information stored on the vehicle register is accurate and up-to-date.By covering the entire vehicle in a coloured adhesive/vinyl wrap, it is the DVLA’s view that the colour change should be recorded. To notify a change of colour you should complete section 7 of the registration certificate V5C and return it to DVLA Swansea SA991BA. You should receive a replacement within two to four weeks

However, I cannot find anything on the DVLA website/GOV website. Exceptionally vague information to be honest. If I wrap the car but leave a part of it unwrapped then one would assume it would not be a colour change, according to the wording. Again, vague at best. In my mind "entire" is a polar word as in black or white, north or south.....pregnant.....can't be a little bit pregnant; either you are or are not.

Audi Paint Warranty:
Three-year paint warranty

All Audi vehicles are provided with a warranty for a period of three years from the date of first registration against any manufacturing defects with the paintwork.

The only preconditions are:

The defect must be reported to a member of the Audi authorised network as soon as it is discovered. This must, of course, be within the warranty period
The defect must not be due to external influences such as accident damage, climatic, thermal, chemical or industrial pollution, insufficient care or maintenance. This will be determined by a member of the Audi authorised network at the time of inspection

Seems like it's how you determine an "entire" car wrap and whether or not you can convince Audi the wrap is not detrimental to the paintwork. I think historically you can prove a wrap is beneficial given it's applied correctly. With the DVLA I'm not so sure and then there would be the domino effect of how it will affect motor insurance. I believe it's down to the individual insurer as to whether they determine a wrap a car modification or not.

It does seem that the DVLA and insurers are becoming more aware of car wraps and dare I say it.......a potential source of extra income by changing their rules where you need to pay extra be it in new documents or modifications.
When not walking on water I fly through the air with the greatest of ease.

Short term I understand why some folk do it, equally if they are doing a lot of track work. But it's not a fix and I prefer to see the paint not paint under clingfilm.

16,000 hard hard miles and 1 yr of PPF on my F-TYPE and the paint was in better condition than the day I got the car.

Expected better of you for someone with a 997TS

DK I read up with other Porsche owners and that was the feedback. What can I say?

It can't have been better than the day you got it!!!!

Frankly I want to drive it not stick it in a giant condom.

20,000 miles in and I have two tiny stone chips on my car. The paint looks fab and no film or bill for fitting. I just don't get why people do it, unless doing regular track days where front end damage can be a real issue. Better than a silly bra I suppose but same flawed logic IMO. Still each to their own and it means the next owner gets a good finish once they remove the film.

Sorry 991.

It genuinely has zero effect on how the paint looks with the film on.

I've mostly had suntek film so can't comment on other makes.

It does depend on a) the paint quality of your OEM b) any vulnerable area's c) the type of driving you do.

In my experience with R8 and F-TYPE as weekend cars, all the cars would have categorically required expensive, hassle and risky resprays to maintain the paint without the PPF as they mostly did fast Road, convoy and track driving.

If it's a daily driver RS 6/4/3 then you'll prob be ok.

Anything low and fast is asking for trouble.

FWIW I've not wrapped my brand new M140i as it won't do that kind of driving and it's washing machine white so easy to match

No PPF on this either, but paint was much harder back in the day...

I don't understand why people want to drive around with stone chips and swirl marks on their cars rather than have nice shiney swirl and chip free paint? And then pay more money to get it resparayed for the next owner!
And if you have only 2 stone chips in 20,00o miles then you are either very lucky or must drive very sensibly. I don't and do a lot of motorway miles so even if I was driving sensibly I'd still pick them up. I have a number of stone chips on my roof now after 17,000 and wished I'd protected it too.
I'm not forcing anyone to get it done, they are free to drive around with imperfections, but I got mine wrapped and love it.
