Tracker Needed

Post by Bit_evl » Sat Oct 22, 2016 1:46 pm

Peeps.

Would welcome a little guidance.
I have changed insurance companies. The new one requires a decent tracker, I have to admit I was surprised the old one did not !

I understand that there is a "default" location to fit the tracker on an RS6 and would like to understand where it is so I can tell the installation engineer NOT to place it there. Also if anyone has any good pricing or comments on the best model etc I would be grateful. I currently have a tracker on the Mog so was going to fit one of them if no better guidance available ?

Thanks

Depends if you want a tracker to just satisfy the insurance company so nice and cheap or if you want all bells and whistles which will pretty much guarantee you get your car back?
If you have the Tracker cat 5 Plus tracker installed (about £700 plus about £200 per year) in a proper hard to get to location then I reckon you will get your car back, less so with any other cat 5 tracker. The Tracker ones are the only ones that work with VHF as well as GPS so will work underground or in a container and cannot be blocked by a GPS jammer. You need to carry a card with you too, so if your car is hijacked and the card is in your pocket, or the car is stolen from home with the keys but not the card then the Tracker call centre will be notified immediately and they will try to contact you to confirm if your car has been stolen. They can remotely disable the car too if the Police give the go ahead. Other cat 5 trackers do this this too but they don't work with VHF.

Or just get a cat 6 or 7 trackers which will keep your insurance company happy.

This is a good guide on prices (they include installation) and features.

The 2 "default " places are only used by Audi themselves. So all I'd say is steer clear from having it fitted at the stealers. And I'd also say stay clear of Cobratrak. Just in case my theory is right that I reckon there are insiders working there and give out information to crooks. I'd use TRACKER themselves. Call them and I'm sure that they still have their own installers and they will put it in a "random" place because they have too. I did the TRACKER training years ago when I worked for TOAD plc and back then you were never allowed to fit in the same place on a same model car more than twice and they used to check as well.

Interesting point on Cobratrak.....I had one of my Panamera and when I dealt with their call centre (twice) just got the feeling something was fishy?

I know it sounds daft call it what you want....just felt very "laid back"...and seemed

Any way

I went for tracker monitor via Mike fish link above.....paid over phone and was fitted within week by a guy who came to my house...fitted very quickly.

What always and still boggles my head is why did someone came to my house to check out my dashboard VIN number the month before my cars was hijacked off me. The only reason I always come to is when my car was first registered and the cobratrak being fitted prior to delivery was that it was on the "15 Reg". After 2 weeks I stuck my private Reg on it and so for all intents it might not have been the same car in the crooks mind unless they double checked it by the VIN. They found my TRACKER and removed it within 2 minutes of entering a social club car park and were seen on CCTV. You work out the time it really took. They would have had stop the car remove the rear panels/TRACKER and back out of car park. 2 mins were recorded from in to out. They knew exactly where it was and what to do.

Why bother? NFU did not ask for Tracker and were just £125 more than cheapest quote. Add in cost of Tracker and no brainer. but I don't want my car back if nicked.

I kinda agree with Markp, do you want it back if it gets nicked.

Is it ever going to be the same?
How long would it take to get back/repaired?

The chances of it being found in a decent condition is slim, it's either going to be found folded round a tree, or burnt out after the bank job.

3 or 4 years ago, I spoke to our insurance company about the saving of the premium by getting a tracker fitted (997 turbo), the guy on the phone told me the cost would go up, only by £40-50 a year, but it would put the premium up?..... madness!

Cobratrak is now owned by Vodaphone and its the most well funded and technically advanced unit. They are also the only tracker company to genuinely cover the whole of europe with their own network. Audi/Porsche etc factory fit them and the newer units allow you to remotely open/lock your car, fold mirrors in, turn lights on from your phone.

I don't get this logic, sorry.

First, if you get your car back having been wrapped round a tree or set alight, that's the same as not getting it back, in my book; it's a write-off.

The security systems on these cars put them out of the capabilities of joyriders, so we can eliminate that fate.

The professional thieves can have your car away in minutes, but they are unlikely to then draw attention to themselves by doing donuts on the high street or in Sainsbry's car park. They are simply going to drive it away quietly to some nice remote lock-up.

So, do you want it back in those circumstances? Well, ideally not, I think we can all agree that a nice new replacement would be preferable. I would certainly prefer a new car, but there are two pragmatic reasons why that is just a fantasy.

Firstly, your next insurance premium will be colossal. When you phone round for insurance, there is a massive difference in answering the question: Have you suffered any losses in the last five years? "Yes, I had a stolen/recovered, total cost to my previous insurer of £1000." or "Yes, stolen not recovered. Total cost to my insurer £68,000".

Second, unless your car is virtually brand new, you are going to be significantly out of pocket on buying a replacement to match your expectations. This is even more problematical if you have a very particular specification to match. I, for example, have to have a tow bar and wouldn't be without ACC, keyless locking, HUD, etc. etc. Thus, if my car is nicked, I will have to buy new again (if simply for the tow bar, which is as rare as hens' teeth) - and that is going to leave me seriously out-of-pocket compared to retaining my existing car.

So, reluctantly, I accept that, if my car is stolen, I am financially better off having it back than losing it altogether.

Also, you never get back the time or money spent modifying. Although my mods are declared they are not covered in the event of a total loss. And the PPF and detailing.

Don't think locations of tracking devices should be a discussion on an open forum guys!

Had Cobra on my wife Cayenne and Tracker on the RS, pain in the arse when you forget the tag though.

Tracker were very slow in activating the system however, i found their admin quite weak.

My new car had a tracker fitted, which I did want to reactivate. However, I wasn't given any details, just two black fobs (which in turn don't have much in the way of details on them).
20161031_113252~2_resized.jpg
Is there any way to work out what it is without phoning around (which given the comments about insiders above, I would hestiate to do)? What do Cobra fobs look like (given I think this the most logical).
