GTR was too extreme for me and not an everyday car, but as a toy it was fantastic. I only want one car (so it must do everything) and the GTR was not really the kind of car to have comfy quiet days away that maybe included Tesco or home-based shopping along the way, but as a full on toy just to take out and play with it was a crazy crazy car. I kind of likened it to a Friday car. On a Monday driving it to work it was a bit annoying, being so hard, noisy, tram lines everywhere but as a Friday car coming home it was a blast, huge fun and excitement massive grin on your face.

RS6 gone now as well though as not enough fun for me. Its a great car out of the box, very fast, comfy, quiet, lovely to drive but just was not for me. if you want to buy a car that is 90% great with nothing to do other than turn the key and go the C7 RS6 is for you. if you want something that maybe is not quiet so good and needs a bit of fettling then maybe not so much. I am in the second camp.
Looks like confusion to me, that's a really polar statement - you had the GTR which was too much, and the RS6 wasn't enough. I wouldn't know where to go from that drama! The RS6 is a family estate, the GTR is a track weapon.

Fair play, I'm up in Aberdeen every week at the moment - what have you moved to? Week before last I had time to visit the dealers, massive amounts of stock! Mercedes had some lovely things in, useless for anything but the dry returned by people who had gone bonkers about depreciation and market volatility. Audi - the same, lots of RS's/R8's sat there. Heck Porsche even had a GT3 RS and GT4 sat in the shop.

The Oil Price has delayed my RS6 only slightly, and 90% there is subjective. For now I have the Ferrari Golf which I would describe as fettling, and I do sit in that camp on many days - soon enough the Ferrari Golf Plus is going in for an Audi 3.2 DSG Quattro (plus turbo) transplant, and all the racing gear underneath. That's a fettler which will be good to drive on limited days of the week, at extreme pace. (Just FYI we're looking for 550BHp, in a beaten up Golf!)

The RS6 which believe me is imminent (awaiting a deal in Aberdeen funnily) is 100% for the following use case:

I want to have a family with me whilst I enjoy my car and shift big stuff, and not really care. Example I want to go for Christmas to the family, and in a car that I enjoy. Or I want to go across Europe to some location on a driving holiday with the family. And reliably.

If I'd no family it would be a 911 Turbo to do the same job. If I wanted extreme car fun it would be a McLaren / GT3 / Fezza all day long. If I was even richer I'd be buying a Panamera Shooting brake Turbo S or a Ferrari FF - Or GTthingyLusso.

Confused I am not, polar statement because they are polar cars you even said it yourself "Track car and family estate". If you go drive them both you will see, on saying that driving them is not enough you would have to live with them for a while to understand. They are miles apart, 2 totally different cars both with compromises. my kids are up so I don't need a huge people carrier like the RS6. I thought the RS6 would be just right but its not.

I have gone for an RS3. on paper (and what I have found so far) a compromise between them both. Easier to live with than the GTR, although not as refined as the C7 but loads of fun and plenty I can do to it. it needs some work to get it to where I will be happy but that's all part of the fun. I don't buy a car just to turn the key and go, I need something I can play with.

What I want is simple.

Practical
Ease of use every day, wife shopping etc
understated
4 wheel drive
Turbo
over 20 mpg on a run
Tow my Go Karts
Quiet enough to have a relaxed conversation
Comfy enough to enjoy a relaxed cruise on our rubbish roads
Fun on the road when I want to play
and fast as hell just because!!

how hard can that be :biggrin3:

I was going to wait until the new RS4 was released (ticks all the boxes above??) but life is too short so lets play with the RS3 for a while and see whats what.

yeah I was in Audi Aberdeen the other day 6 RS6's in there I am sure you will be able to get a good deal!!
Nice one on the RS3, too small for me. Your statement was polar because, you said that the GTR was too hard, and the RS6 not enough - and then continued to say that you wanted something that you could play with, and drive hard aka a GTR.

We didn't throw budget in! GTR vs RS6 @ 90k

Or RS3 @ 45kish I'm (in a nice way) getting even more confused :-) and chuckling.

I have a GTR at the moment, and i am looking to sell it now. The only reason i am selling is because i need a more practical car. I need a car for everyday use, that i can throw all of my work bits and bobs in to and still get 2 adults in the back comfortably, and still give me the power i need. Its a more sensible option than the GTR but there isnt much else on the market that can offer me all of the above.

I love the GTR, its an amazing car. Mine is a 700bhp animal with all the added mods including Akrapovic exhaust, Alcon Brakes, Litchfield suspension blah blah blah. So it really is a furious car, nothing beats it in terms of raw speed and fun. This is my second GTR and it will be a sad day when it finally goes. However the Mrs and work commitments mean that the RS6 is the way forward for me in the mean time. (Until i can afford a second car).

Nissan GTR = Super car speed and power.

I sold my RS6 for very similar reasons to Paulm. Just didn't quite do it for me despite thinking (i was pretty damned sure) it would. In the end I got the 911 (which I love) then realised I needed a runabout - Golf R... but that didn't feel quite right so in 3 weeks I will have a C63s coupe to replace that .... then maybe all my boxes will be ticked for a bit. Maybe.

Bar any traction

I lasted 4 months with my M5 for that very reason and can honestly say, i'll never go back to a rear wheel drive car where the engine is over the front axle.

I have the 911 for traction (4WD), the C63 for fun... Err... the 911 for fun, the C63 for practicality... ah well it makes sense to me Leo :beerchug:

Seriously though I do miss rear wheel drive, the twitchyness of it, having to think before slamming foot to floor. Same reason I still like manual cars... you just feel more connected.

Just noticed your car list. 21 Turbo. I had an H reg black 21 turbo quadra years ago. Fantastic car in its day. BBR tune which turned out to be a stronger actuator which gave 1.2 bar of boost. Great fun though.

My 21 was an F reg, grey. My 5 Turbo had a BBR tune. Pinked like crazy and had torque steer from hell. The tune was a very high tech aluminium valve in a turbo hose. Well I say valve, it was a tube with a hole in it. A mate had a Peugeot 1.9Gti with a Turbo Technics conversion. That was a lovely piece of kit and very fast indeed.

Thanks for the replys lads...some interesting comments..as stated it doesnt have to be practical anymore as i have the disco now so maybe the 6 might go on the back burner for now? I think personnaly it has to be a 4wd car i sill want to take it out over winter instead of wrapping it up till the summer...i,ve had a beemer before in the winter and its a pain in the ass!!! I suppose im gunna have to test drive the gtr,rs6 and maybe a porche which i never thought about...and go from there...its not gunna be used for track days more like a weekend toy when the wife and kids are annoying me im off out :biggrin3:

Cheers jay

We may have gone slightly off topic there ;)

Personally I would get something a bit daft for the second car. Obviously I'm a big Porsche fan so I'm biased but depending on how much you want to spend you might want to look at a Carrera 4 or a Carrera 4s if you want something with 4WD. Another option might be a Boxster or a Cayman, arguably better value than the 911s and great to drive. Finally you might want to look at an F-Type. My partner bought one recently (S) and it's a hell of a car. Again 4WD available if you don't mind the extra.

RWD is fine in winter, just get a set of winter tyres. I've had an M3 and Boxster during winter months. The Boxster was twitchy as the rear tyres (not winters) became low in tread (but was great fun). The M3 on winters was fine at close to 0 degree's over Yorshire moors runs. Was slightly slower than some of the quattro's. It was arguably more fun though. You definitely have to show the car respect, but it's rewarding.

Ultimately if you are looking for one of the fastest cars on the road, then a GTR is going to tick the box. I'd Personally prefer something more engaging though.

How about a BMW 1M? Cheaper, more rewarding, depreciation proof. Highly tuneable but at the expense of point 3 in the prior sentence.

There is no car that does everything. The closest is probably a Ferrari FF, and you're looking at £250k.

As such, whatever you buy it is going to be compromised in some way. As such, the only real solution is to have one more than one car!

I have to say, i am really pleased with the RS6 thus far:

- Still feels bonkers fast
- Sport diff makes it a surprisingly keen steer
- Relaxing at all times
- Loads of room
- Gets admiring looks and knowing nods
- I've got 30mpg!!
- Sounds great
- At home at a business meeting and at a car meet

I'd like to try a GTR, but haven't gotten over the image. With them no longer being that expensive, it's not helped that you see more of them in luminous green or with giant rear wings; just not my kind of thing. I've had two Porsche Turbos though, so would be great to compare.
