RS6 Track Brakes
Re: RS6 Track Brakes
I'd go with the dealer not having a scooby do. They don't look particularly bad to me.

Re: RS6 Track Brakes
I currently have a spare set of Used front ceramics with slight chipping on the edge, let me know if you need them

Re: RS6 Track Brakes
You have first version of rear ceramic brakes, stange that Audi didn't change those when they were changing fronts?
Fronts doesn't look that bad, rear need to be replaced soon.
Kind Regards

Re: RS6 Track Brakes
I presume the last 2 pictures are of the rear discs? Maybe part of the design but it doesn't seem right that there is a good 15-20% of the rear braking surface not in contact with the pads. Given there are vent holes in the unworn part you'd have thought the pads should be contacting further into the centre of the disc. Also by the looks of the colour of your front calliper it appears that there has been a lot of heat passing into them which won't be doing the brake fluid much good! Design of ceramic discs given their relatively poor heat conduction relative to steel (hence their larger diameter) is very complex- seems Audi might need to redo their sums!
Have to agree with the track advice to brake once into a corner scrubbing just enough speed off to get the foot back down as close after mid apex as possible. Braking was a key skill that helped my Son progress in Karting and we went through a fair amount of racing brake pads perfecting it. Once we changed to a CNC milled steel vented Brake disc (rather than vented cast) the use of pads settled down thanks to better heat dissipation (disc was typically 100 deg C cooler when he came back into the pits following many wins!)
So glad I stuck with the "plain old" steel ones given all of the issues reported with ceramics, mind you there have been quite a few reports of issues with the steels. I have had no issues with my steel discs (touch wood) other than having to remove rust blocking the vent holes after having left the car standing for over a month during last winter.
I will never have the balls to track my RS6- I know the theory but too scared of kissing +£85K goodbye!

Re: RS6 Track Brakes
Yes, that was weird to me as well. A third of the rear disc doesn't even get touched - very strange.
How can you tell that the front calipers have had a lot of heat passing into them?
The car is amazing on the track. Went from C5 to E60 M5 to C7, and each time the step up is a whole generational shift. The RS6 is such a great experience on the track (needed the 730bhp MTM package to really match the chassis though - otherwise the chassis was just too good). Sure, the weight shows itself, but when you're on an unknown track with no runoff, it's just planted, it just goes exactly where you want it to. If you overshoot a corner, you brake into it and the chassis just holds on.. And it's the only way I can persuade my wife to let us take the trip down to the ring - every time we have a look at a porsche boot, she just says hell no..

Re: RS6 Track Brakes
Your RS6 was early build right? Because Audi change design of rear ceramic discs after a few month of production. Now rear discs have larger bells. They actually change them twice and FL cars have "third" generation of 4G discs.
Thats why it is strange that they didn't replace you rears, because you have latest in the front.
No feedback on o-brakes, but I still think ceramics are the best for that kind of the car (weight). It's a lot how you brake.
Regards

Re: RS6 Track Brakes
I believe the original colour of the callipers are grey- in the picture they appear to have discoloured and look almost golden. I read somewhere else (this forum?) of others noting the callipers changed colour after some hard driving. I have red callipers and they still look as good as new, mind you I have never pushed my car hard for sustained periods of time.
I'd love to try the ring, just nowhere near enough run off for me. At least in competitions there is a rule book and most drivers have a reasonable level of skill and respect..."wrung what you brung" events in my pride and joy is not something I have the nerve for.

Re: RS6 Track Brakes
Yep I placed my deposit in 2010.. It was pretty much the first customer car from my dealer. The brakes have been the only issue though, so that's good.
Thanks for reminding me. I'd got so used to the gold calipers I actually thought that was the original colour. But you're right, they'd got discoloured because of the heat.
By the sounds of things I'm going to bite the bullet, replace the rear discs with the latest generation, and start braking harder and later.

Some good stuff regarding the Ceramic V Steel debate with some physics about braking...might help make your mind up which way to go
