Hi
New to the forum so please be gentle, (regular on vwaudiforum). Thinking about upgrading my beloved A6bitdi to an RS6. (or a 911 Carrerra S)
Neither the brochure or the "performance specialist" in my local dealer seem sure what the sport exhaust is. The brochure implies its simply the black oval end pipe around the standard exhaust. I cant believe even Audi would charge £1k just for that! There seem to be no images available anywhere of the standard exhaust. The dealer "expert" told me the sport is a speaker system inside (like by bitdi) to make a computer assisted noise, which I really doubt is true.
I hope/assume the sport exhaust is actually a better whole pipe / chamber system from the engine with flaps/valves to change the sound.
Can anyone explain what it includes and how it works and the difference to the standard exhaust?
Are there any videos of the normal and sport?
Is the sport version still quiet on the motorway/normal driving etc in comfort mode? (i have young kids and the wife to accommodate).

Sports exhaust makes a little more noise than a standard system.

The sports exhaust doesn't change the power output of the engine. It is identical in principle to the sports exhausts fitted by many mainstream manufacturers (Jaguar, Porsche, etc.) in that is uses a valve in each rear box that is opened in certain circumstances to change the acoustic behaviour of the exhaust (but not it's flow capacity or back pressure).
Even in day-to-day use, the sports exhaust has a pleasing tone that is absent from the standard exhaust. Under hard acceleration, there is a distinct V8 roar, but for the most part you hardly notice the difference with the sports exhaust.
If you move into the sports programme or Dynamic mode or use the manual gear selector, the valves stay open constantly and you get a real sense of the engine's presence through the exhaust. Especially pleasing - if slightly pointless - is the series of crackles and pops you get on over-run.
At the end of the day, it's a bit of frippery, an entertainment and no more. I think those of us who have it chose it as a bit of boyish fun. For me, the three main points are:
* when you just want you RS6 to be an estate car for shopping or a motorway cruise then the sports exhaust is silent and the car is whisper quiet
* You don't have to tell your insurance company about it
* When you sell the car, its a plus point in its favour, whereas the standard exhaust and (for many buyers) an aftermarket exhaust are points counting against

Sports exhaust a must if you want decent noise but stealth in town / on journeys with the family etc.
Aftermarket options sound good but can be OTT in my opinion for day to day use - too noisy.

100% agree with markP abso must, drive mine in dynamic most of the time and I can't stop smiling,drive hard and the sound is immense,it splutters ,blows back ,pops ,crackles ,put it in comfort and you wouldn't know you had it,even in D mode it's quiet, S mode another matter-boys toys I know but you must have it.

So just to be 100% sure then, the £1000 sport exhaust has these valves so i assume the standard free one does not? That means i guess that the standard one is tuned to be not too loud not too quiet and sounds the same in comfort or dymamic just gets the pop.and crackle added in dynamic?.
Very happily will spend 1k for the switcheable valves if not standard.

I think they both have valves, the sports exhaust is the same just louder.
