The 4.0 TFSi C7 S6 has always been a discreet bargain alongside the RS6 getting all the headlines. You are slightly restricted by the fact it runs a VAG double clutch box - not the 8 speed ZF in the RS6. MRC Stage 1 and a Milltek non-resonated would be a sensible combo - but of course it won't be in the same league as a 700 bhp C6 RS6

You *can* get 700 bhp. But it would be playing Russian roulette with the gearbox imo......

Sorry that is nonsense, the Bentley V8 is running 1000nm of torque through its box as standard

With ZF8, not double clutch in the S6. Having said that, not sure if it is the same ZF8.

I agree, it's same basic design but different spec.

S8 still has different pistons and turbos to the C7 RS6 so slightly less power after a Stage 1 - 635bhp vs 680bhp
S6 is a good compromise but a lot less power with Stage 1 @ 540bhp

It's often said the gearbox is the other major contributing factor the the C7 RS6 package, what gearbox does the S8 have?

As a stock car the rs6 c7 is very impressive but i was spoilt by the tuned c6 i had. Yes it would be great to tune the c7 but it does not desperately need it like a stock c6 does. The c7 gearbox is excellent.

I need rear seat room as my youngest son is now 6ft 3 (at 15!) so having been in an A7 3.0 TDi and found the interior cramped (for the size of the car) I ruled an RS7 out.
S8+ would be perfect for you then. The rear legroom & headroom is insane & as above the LWB (which they won't do the S8 in) is mental, i'm sure it's larger than my 1st house in there.
Problem is it costs as much as a house!

(north of the Watford Gap at least!)
Very true as with only a dusting of options (however it may not need much as standard Spec will no doubt be epic) it will be a £100k car. However i bet with some arm twisting a new one could be acquired for around £80k as a 20% drop has always been possible on previous S8/A8's. Fingers crossed.

That's good to know. I assumed certain internals would differ, but didn't realise the S8 had different pistons & turbos.

So the S8+ i guess may have improved internals over the C7 RS6 to gain the extra 35bhp or is it purely an uplift of the tuning? Guess it's hard to know for sure until the car actually arrives.

Certainly the only current/upcoming Audi i'm very keen to have a sniff around.

670 HP and 690 lbft claimed for stage 1 tuned S8.

Mine did 11.38 quarter in the damp. I don't feel short changed after a tuned R35 GTR. The S8 has a very nice chassis balance. It has never understeered, steering feels fine. It will oversteer :D
