A Couple of Spec Questions

I'm hoping 1 of you learned gentlemen can help. Playing with the configurator shows that adding the assistance pack which includes adaptive cruise control adds a lens to the front bumper in approximately what I would call the fog light position. My question is do you get only 1 lens on 1 side of the car with this option or do you get 2 lens for symmetry purposes or do you need to spec the speed display option to get the 2nd lens??

Also on the pre-facelift car I've seen various photos of interior - on some the touch pad on the centre console is number 1 to 6 and others it appears to be blank. What does the difference signify - are they aligned to different options or a bit like tyres it is pot luck what the car is supplied with ??

Radar sensors are on both sides for for the ACC option, located where fog lights might be traditionally mounted.

The Touch pad has back lit characters- in some modes it shows numbers 1-6, in other modes it shows arrow keys around the border (like when setting balance/fader for audio) and sometimes it is off.

Pretty sure the radar are two fold, one in each fog light position.

The speed display function is done by the camera mounted behind the rear view mirror. This camera also supplements the ACC, and is used for lane assist. The ACC also uses the PDS ultrasonics for the close up stop and go function.

I had the same issue on the touch pad when I was A7 shopping.

It changes. During radio etc, it has 1 to 6 displayed, and Navigation etc has blank displayed so you can hand write postcodes etc.

Never seen an RS6 with one front "fog light" so think they come in twos.
The pad changes depending on what you're using, listening to as per comments above

My RS4 has only one radar sensor on the drivers side for ACC. It's not stop and go ACC though so I guess that's something to do with it

Okay - thanks chaps - makes it clear. I love the ACC on my C6 but an expensive nicety on the C7. Temptation!!

The new generation ACC is so much more superior to the old one. Because it uses the camera as well as radar, it 'understands' lane discipline, where the old one didn't.

If you go round a slow sweeping motorway bend on the old one, it would often hoof on if there was a vehicle on the inside lane to you. The new one doesn't. It wont intentionally undertake anyone in the lane to the right of you either....

Oh, and for the brave, it now works all the way up to 155 mph. <gulp> I tried it at 120, once, and briefly...

The whole camera behind the rear view mirror does add a level of complexity to windscreen replacement though as the whole thing needs recalibrating afterwards. And if you have the heads up display as well then it gets further still complicated... I guess that 'progress' though...

Makes for a great debate with Insurers when a replacement is required (albeit on a Bimmer not an Audi). Dear Tesco's insurance, please don't try to palm me off with a non BMW screen as it's not purely a piece of glass but has lots of important <beep> relying on it such as auto lights, wipers, a couple of cameras & HUD so a standard screen Mr Insurer isn't gonna cut it & BMW will rightly so have a <beep> fit should i need to enter a warranty claim for any stuffs linked to the screen.

Needless to say i got a BMW OEM screen with all the correct stamps etc.

Had a similar experience with Elephant insurance about replacing my 911TTS windscreen. Porsche said that the new screen MUST be re-calibrated for the headlight sensors. Elephant said that their fitters had insisted that this was unheard of and was not required at all. I supplied a tech bulletin from Porsche saying it was and after a further argument (where I asked them for written confirmation they would be liable if the work wasn't done) they caved.

Their "expert" fitters then came out with the wrong windscreen altogether. After finally getting the screen replaced (took another week to get one) I took the car into Porsche to get it calibrated. They had to completely refit the mirror assembly because a wire had been trapped throwing the entire sensor completely out of line.
