RS4 v 911 GT3?

Post by karl » Sun Aug 02, 2009 9:00 am

Saw a 911 996 GT3 in black for sale yesterday at the local Porsche dealer and it looked gorgeous. It was getting on a bit though (2004 with 37000 mls). It did look the business though and I was sorely tempted to enquire further but thought I'd best walk away and have a long hard think about it. The drive home (in the rain just for a change) was awesome and it left me with a grin on my face and left me thinking that the 911 would have to be something special to beat my RS4, especially after it's had a MRC remap, Milltek, Sachs clutch and Brembo big brake conversion. Would I be a fool to opt for the 911?Is there something wrong with me?

my next car will hopefully be a 997 GT3 or turbo. That is quite a lot of miles for a GT3, most of them just seem to be used on track so even 5 yr examples only have say 15,000 miles on them. I assume thats the mk2 996 GT3 if its a 2004 car. The GT3 will eat the RS4 on the track, but in everyday life I think the RS4 is the much better car. There is a video on the EVO website of an RS4 chasing a GT3 (on bedford autodrome I think), the RS4 gets dropped fairly easily. Make it wet tho and the RS4 will probably be quicker!

Two very different cars IMHO, both brillant in their own right.

If do you do decide to change, can I have first dibs on the big brake set-up?! :)

996 GT3s (as with all 911s) are really nice. Could easily be tempted myself, especially with the rock steady depreciation.

I'd need a second car for all the day to day stuff though, B&Q, supermarket, golf clubs, passengers(!) etc etc. This is why the RS4/6 cars are so good day to day. Fast and you can put stuff in them.

Karl, if there is a choice for you, get a turbo, not a GT3, even though the GT3 is a nice car, the turbo will provide you with a much more enjoyable kick... then with just an exhaust and a remap, you'll get 500 BHP or more depending on other mods :)

911 Turbo, no brainer. Performance, handling, build quality, reliability, excitement, sensible depreciation and reasonable practicality for a super car. Mine is up to 525 bhp with a titanium exhaust and DMS remap and its the quickest car I will ever drive.

I have come from the other direction. Used to have a 996 Turbo and had a 997 GT3 on order when Mrs informed me the second was on its way. So I went for the RS4.

The RS4 ticks every box, and is hard to beat as an all rounder. But the power (especially of the turbo) and the sharpness (especially of the GT3) is something else. If you can, you must! If straight line power is your thing, Turbo, if track / sunday drive in the hills, GT3.

So, knowing what you know, if you had to choose between the three, which would it be?

I know which one I have chosen    it's an X50 turbo converted to GT2 RWD with a genuine GT2 box and other bits and pieces... oh and a few mods done on the engine too :)

I would go for a 996 turbo X50 - not sure about removing the 4wd system to make it a GT2 - resale would be a real problem. Also, being used to 4WD, I would go for Turbo.

But, for a few more quid, a low milage GT3 996 would be fun.

In answer to your question, knowing what I know now, the RS4. Better built, better company and as fun, albeit less power, than a turbo. You guys all have your moans on this forum about audi from time to time, but Porsche can be real sh*t bags. Its only that I have a legal background that I came through the experience!

I came from a MK2 996 GT3 to my current RS4 and there isn't a day that goes by when I don't regret it! A GT3 is not for everyone, it is very raw and it is hard work unless you are very dedicated but to me it's a much more special car. Truth is on most roads the RS4 is quicker, not through its performance but through its ability to deploy that performance but that misses the whole GT3 thing completely, just as our Turbo man above seems to have missed it I suggest. I used my GT3 day to day, bought it from an OPC with 6K on the clock (it was mint) and sold it 14 months later with 26K on the clock and still mint! I had planned to move into a MK2 997 GT3 but current business climate put pay to that so I am still in my RS4 but I am actually thinkning of getting back into another 996 GT3.

Now this is a very personal thing, most people will really struggle with it day to day as it is hard work but I loved it, every single bit of it. Rain, snow, bumpy roads, long day etc., wouldn't have changed it for the world, epic car and VERY different to any other 911. Special car the GT3, if you are like me you'll drive one and have to buy it and be addicted for life. The RS4 is an amazing road car but a GT3 is an epic car, very very special bits of kit and side by side quite noticeably quicker as VMax events will show. On a track, where you MUST take your GT3 the difference is massive!

I think I may have missed out!

Proper driving car is a different thing. I found my old turbo to be like a smaller faster RS4. Never owned the GT3 - had one on order, but 5 minutes of weakness ended that dream!

My honest opinion, Turbo was great, but more in a straight line "look at me in my flash car" kind of way. Poor service and problems with the motor made it unspecial, for me at least.

A standard turbo is little if any quicker than a GT3 actually. I know because I ran my GT3 at Fighting Torque in 2007 and was quicker over a 3/4 mile standing start than the standard turbo there and all but 2 sorted TVR's as it turns out, being quicker than 60 plus TVR's! A GT3 is VERY quick in a straight line but its power delivery is much more consistent where the Turbo is, well, a turbo with the normal kick in the ass you get from such engines. Sure a Turbo can be made to be hugely fast but it's both heavier and less sharp than a GT3. If the feeling of power or ability to mod is imporant then I can see why you may prefer a Turbo but in my view its not much more enjoyable, the reverse in fact.

Housemaster - Can you explain what you mean when you say the GT3 is hard work?
