718 Cayman & Boxster S

Post by don0301 » Wed Jan 27, 2016 10:38 am

These seem in a very mild tune 2.5l turbo 345hp 310lbft

With tuning, I can see these being unbelievable performers

Any thoughts?

Honestly I'm just taking the Mick, I'm a big Porsche can and the Cayman is fantastic.

Are you thinking of tuning them yourselves or finding a company?

The performance will be great, but one of the main ingredients which made the 981 so brilliant is no longer there. It's one thing to go to a turbocharged flat 6 in the 911s now, paying this much for a 4-cylinder Porsche is another. They were always about being fun an exciting rather than clinically fast on paper. In that regard they've definitely gone backwards.

I've seen a quote from the guy responsible for the 718 product line which basically boils down to Porsche marketing demanding a bigger gap between the Boxster/Cayman and 911. That and the fact there's no room in the platform to add turbos if you keep a 6.

Of course I should really be thanking them as I'll be happy as a clown with my 981 GTS now with zero chance of regret with the new model arriving.

I'm happy with my hilarious stage 2 RS6 V10 at the moment, no idea where I'm going to go after this car...

Was just pondering that with simple (ie. cheapish) tuning, I'd imagine these things will be very capable.

Apparently they sound ok but then somebody else described it as sounding like an original scooby which isn't itself bad, just not in a Porsche.

Performance is impressive.

Like the new rear and lights.

Non of this enough for us to chop ours in for one though, I'm not a turbo fan

Tbh I had a 2.7 boxster last week whilst my cayenne was in for a service and it felt gutless whilst in auto. The pdk tries to get to the high gears as fast as possible and the lack of torque meant it had to shift 4 odd gears on heavy kick down. Needless to say they are fun and chuck able in manual but when I got back in mine it showed how much the torque is missing for when your not pressing on but pottering looking at your reflection in Shop fronts. Hi Andy

Just to be clear, the thread is about the new turbo engine ones.

It seems Porsche are releasing them with a low state of tune, and I was just pondering with some cheap(ish) tuning I would think they would be pretty awesome performers.

Time will tell I guess.

The new standard Cayman S 420Nm doesn't compare well with my 1100+ :kissmyrings:
