996 -> 997

So I've been looking at a decent amount of Pork lately. Mostly research on 996.2 and 997 C2Ss.
A couple of things have become apparent;

1/ The majority of people selling pieces of Pork know fcuk all! I'm seeing wild variations in stated power, transmissions, aspiration, cylinder counts and engine layouts. The amount of cars that I've clicked on stated as manual, only to see a tiptro sat squarely in the tranny tunnel is truly staggering.
Also, the amount of times I've seen 996.2 C2S sporting 200HP is beyond a joke.

2/ There appears to be a new (and horrific) trend to convert 996 911s into 997s... it looks like a bastard child of a Gemballa and a fully retarded 997... that's melted.

Now, remember, these are all 996s. I can understand facelifting a 996 to a 996.2, I can see that as a good idea. The gen1 996 lights were fucken awful, just awful and unlike most people (well, probably everyone), I like the 996.2 front-end. It's unique, and well, I really like it. But these 996 to 997 abominations need to die, it's a horrible practice, like doctors that give breast-reductions, these peoples should be shot.

I keep finding myself looking at 997's as well bam.

Had a look at a lovely cobalt blue 997 C4S on monday afternoon with some nice options but felt it was a little strong on price and pushing close to C63 coupe money.

I also stopped at a dealer in passing to look at a Maserati 4200 yesterday; what a flaming let down that was. Great looks, engine and sound but everything else was pants.

I have no interest in any other car at the moment. Regardless of comparative cost. I really want a 993 C2S but I've considered that ship sailed. The AMG is interesting but it ain't pork, I've wanted a 911 since I was a boy. It's etched into my mind after acquiring my first Matchbox car - a green 930 911.

With the way of enforced downsizing to combustion engines, I see the more modern NA 911s as good investments. Last of breed, so to speak.

996 front ends are ugly in both guises, they remind me of the hidious Ford Scorpio. It's not that much more to get into an early 997 which is far better looking and the interior pretty decent?

First one is ok'ish, just needs the splitter element painting black. Embrace the conversions :

Why on earth would you spend 20k on a 996 bastardised to 'look' like a 997 when you can have a really good 997 for 20k nowdays?

I was quite surprised how much the early 997's have come down in price. I've been flirting with the idea of getting Cayman but might change my mind.

My head says 997C2S, the prices aren't too far apart from the 996.2C2S , which is weird. I just really like the 996.2 head lights, what can I say, I've got odd tastes, interior doesn't bother me. Either choice is probably only going to appreciate in value.

If the heart wins over your head then at least go for the 40th Anniversary model, although not that limited in numbers it would probably be a better bet for the future.

So much car for the money! 997s have been under 20k for quite a while, but of course as the years continue to roll past, you can get a better and better one for your 20k.

The compromise with the example above is a) 3.6 not 3.8 and b) 18s not 19s. FPSH with recent front and rear discs and pads is a bonus

Got to say it appears a bit of a bargain, exterior was extremely tidy for the age and mileage interior showing a bit more wear but no more than to be expected.

Went well and sounded pretty sweet with just a slight exhaust rattle on cold start.

Only issue I found was that the heated seats weren't working, this appears to have been caused by a flat battery and will need to be coded back in. Apparently this normally takes out the multi changer as well although I didn't check that out.

Tiptronic and silver, other than that, tidy. I can't really see these getting much cheaper. I get the feeling that the 991s are going to be a massive ballache to service and maintain, they're essentially a mid-engined car making it a hard package to work on.

Investment wise as long as the 993 is manual and has Varioram you cant really go wrong, they are friggin awesome cars
