F90 M5

Post by Paulm » Sat Aug 08, 2020 11:19 am

Well as some predicted it happened.
I kept it longer than spring  , but if truth be told I tried to sell it in January as I hated it that much.

Issues for me,

Suspension crazy hard. H&Rs helped but still rubbish on the roads where I live. I reckon if you do a lot of Motorway driving it would be fine. I don’t have that luxury

Suspension again, does not absorb any bumps, when playing it just wants to bounce you off the road.

MPG, even when driving miss daisy, I could not get above 19mpg. I don’t mind what I get when playing but expect at least low 20s normal driving.

Low compression engine and big turbos has little or no torque below 3k revs. Even cruising on the motorway coming to a hill it would change down to 7th or even 6th at some points. Nailing it though the engine is fantastic, plenty of power and howled to the red line.

Cabin boom was really really annoying over rough tarmac. BMW have used hard rubber (solid) suspension bushing to improve handling, but the negative effect is ALL noise is transmitted into the cabin. Going over Shell grip did my head in.

F90 M5,

Can get 30mpg relatively easy on a run. Knocking around the town is an easy 23mpg currently getting 25mpg. Wife got 31.8mpg the other day. She never got 25 on the X3MC.

Suspension is “just” comfy enough. Firm but more than acceptable and is compliant in bouncy rough road when playing. Really inspires confidence. I did not want the M5 comp. I could not face more unbearable ride just to get another 25bhp. 10% extra stiffer springs, larger ARB and retuned shocks. Pass on that.

Engine is fantastic, loads of torque and huge power when nailing it. Don’t get me wrong the X3MC has a great engine when over 3k revs. It’s like a 600cc motorbike vs 1000cc bike. Both you can scream if you like but the 1000cc bike you can play at any revs.

Surround View is a pretty cool function.

As I liked my other 2 M5s apart from lack of grip, I should probably have gone straight to the F90

Maybe slightly lower at the front, rear is perfect. Black front grilles. Other than that, it is so bloody fast I dont think I need to. Dont think I have ever said that.

Sounds a bit boring though, OPFs have killed all the fun noises.

So, done 3 or 4k in the M5 and I have got to say I am really impressed (for a change) Those who know me know I have no loyalty to any brand or car, if its rubbish its rubbish.

Engine. This thing is vey very fast. So fast in fact I am contemplating leaving it standard. Can’t remember when that has ever happened before. Loads of low-down torque and it likes to rev. Best of both worlds.
MPG. Fantastic for what it is. 25+ is easy. Wife gets over 30mpg. Not that I buy car for MPG but lower than 20 on a steady run really annoys me. The X3MC was brutal no matter what
Sound. Pretty rubbish. OPF kills the sound that’s for sure
Comfort. “Just” comfy enough. Still hard but compliant enough not to bother me. In-laws can travel in comfort. Really glad I did not go for the Comp.
Looks. Always subjective. I really like how it looks.
Handling. Very impressed. I’ve had a few playing sessions and can say unless you are a complete muppet you won’t upset this car on the roads. I think the issue is, it gives you huge confidence to keep pushing, when it does break free will be it gradual or instant? My guess would be instant, it will try and kill you when it does let go.
Road noise. My pet hate. Again, “just” quiet enough. My roads are very poor but its pretty quiet. When I do go south on dual carriageways its more or less silent. I will prob still do a bit of sound proofing in rear arch area to kill road noise a bit more.
Toys, More than enough to keep you busy.
Only done one launch, 0-60 3.3 is crazy fast. Draggy did not measure 1/4mile for some reason. Great fun.
4WD is a must for this kid of power. My old F10s did nothing put light up the tyres. This thing just grips and goes even in the wet. Not tried 2WD mode. No need to, had enough of that when I had the F10 M5.
