Dilemma!
Dilemma!
Having been in AWD for the past couple of years (two RS6’s and now an A45 which is for sale as I can’t stand it) I’ve been really ‘sold on the all year round capability of AWD which is why I’ve been looking at RS/S models again.
I had 13 years with BMW’s and they are fantastic cars but you always have the traction issues on powerful RWD cars.
Recently I’ve been looking at this:
Awesome power delivery, traction etc etc plus of course THAT engine and also out of main warranty (although will have the standard approved used 1 year warranty) and therefore ripe for a trip to MRC for some magic treatment (my one big regret on my C6 was not tuning it). One minus point was how heavy it felt! Plus the tech is starting to feel dated now.
On a whim I decided to have a look at BMW’s and found this yesterday:
Competition Pack 17 plate with some lovely extras (normally I go for dark cars but the contrast with the carbon and the Silverstone Blue looked fantastic).
Took their demonstrator for a test drive-unfortunately it was brand new and so I couldn’t take it over 4.5 k revs but the drive was enough to make me seriously consider getting into one! I know people bang on about being balanced and loads of feel etc but the fact is I’d forgotten how well BMW M Cars drive. What a machine!
Being the Comp Pack it’s a significant advance on from the standard one (so every review says) and the handling was sublime. Tech was bang up to date as well (Audi & BMW are the leaders I reckon-Mercedes is slowly catching up and the A45 system is so sh1t it drives me to distraction).
My main concerns are when it gets damp/cold/wet (pretty much most of the year in the UK) and that’s where the RS/S cars really come into their own. Plus it’s not a V8 of course (or V anything-it’s a 3 litre twin turbo straight six).
Massively impressive car though-felt really sharp and focused in a way most RS’s would struggle (until cornering in the wet in which case all bets are off!).
Thoughts? For balance that RS7 is a 64 plate with 34k miles and the M3 is a 17 plate with 9k miles and it’s £43,994

Re: Dilemma!
Traction is the issue as you well know
I’ve chucked a few around fast circuits like thruxton and good wood and the traction control was flashing all the way around - it was bone dry!!
In the wet God only knows!
Don’t get me wrong they look stunning but as a DD over here I’m just not sure

Re: Dilemma!
I’d say the traction is improved over the ‘normal’ M3/4 (according to every review I’ve read) as the non Comp Pack ones are notoriously spiky and can break traction very easily. When I drove it the other day and tried some fast (as fast as not being able to take it over 4.5k revs would let me) cornering there was no indication of he rear end letting go. Having said that I was warned that in ‘M2’ mode with TC off then it’s a monster and will powerslide like a good ‘un.
To be honest the whole traction thing is pretty much the only thing holding me back (plus the car I like doesn’t have the ‘icon’ Matrix LED’s only xenons but I guess I can live with that). The RS7 felt really heavy (my A45 is 1550 kgs with the 7 as 1920 kgs) and actually felt quite dated inside. But of course it’s a hairy chested battering ram of a car that are a rare sight on the roads and the engine is a masterpiece.
Don’t get that much engine note from the M3 as it’s a straight 6 three litre lump (albeit with 444 bhp and 406 lb ft torque) but the Comp Pack gives you a sports exhaust. It handled better than any RS or S I’ve ever driven but that’s the whole ‘M’ thing isn’t it? But as you say soon as it gets damp and cold (which isn’t far away let’s face it) then that little yellow light starts flashing and you’re spinning away while the RS just squats and goes!
Nice choice to have though....and whatever I choose will be light years ahead of the A45 which is frankly the most disappointing and frustrating car I’ve ever owned.

Re: Dilemma!
Summer = m3, for the other 50 weeks of the year the rs4 fits my needs. However if the next m3 has 4wd, and still handles it will be bye-bye audi.

Re: Dilemma!
Just got my finance figures back and basically with the RS7 (2.5 years older than the M3 which is a 17 plate) I’d have to put money down (not much -around £1k) and then pay £105 a month more than the M3. Putting zero money down I’ll only be paying £20 a month more for a 1 year old immaculate M3 Comp Pack than my 2.5 year old <beep> A45......starting to look like a no brainer to me.

Re: Dilemma!
Thats more than I pay for my mortgage. A good dilemma to have though.
If an apple a day keeps the doctor away, when doctors eat apples do they disappear?

Dude, that's like less than a third of my mortgage, do you live in a shed?vagmachine wrote: ↑Tue May 15, 2018 4:23 pm

Re: Dilemma!
Sometimes i do wonder the amount of things that have gone wrong in it.
Im just living well within my means i guess, then again will be upping the payments next year to pay it off quicker.
