My New M5 intial thoughts.

Post by C6Dia » Fri Mar 31, 2017 10:33 pm

Hi all,

I have recently purchased a DMS tuned M5 with 700+ hp from a fellow forum member.

This is my first real M car so I cannot compare to previous generations. However coming from a C6 MRCd RS, it is definitely a step forward in terms of ride, handling and performance. This is a given being 4 years newer.

Thoughts so far:

Much newer interior; features like head up display linking the iphone to apple music and everything talking to eachother. Especially useful with the new phone laws. The newer tech makes it a nicer place to be.

Looks; although subjective, had a much more aggressive road presence (this one is lowered slightly) but personally i prefer the looks of it.

Performance; on a roll this thing absolutely monsters the RS. Although tuned, in standard guise I personally think the RS would have it. The gearbox, although pretty bulletproof the 6spd in the RS cannot match the DCT of the M5. The power feels un interrupted when going through the box and shifts are smoother.

Sound; My RS had the back boxes gutted, both inside and out sounded better than the M5. The M5 does have the odd crackle and pop which is a nice sound in standard form, but I prefer the Audi. Maybe the addition of an aftermarket exhaust or gutting the back box again may help.

Handling; the audi is more confidence inspiring when the weather isnt perfect. Little or no spin out of corners on windy roads, but you could really feel the weight in the nose. Definitely understeer biased
The M5 on a dry day is completely different, it feels far lighter on its feet, almost no understeer, the front digs in and goes exactly where you want and so im confident would leave RS on the same piece of tarmac.
That being said it needs to be dry. So RS is faster most of the time.

All in all for the cost to change i feel these are some whag of a bargain and i am very happy with the move. I would recommend it.
The horrors of no traction and twitchy back end are pretty unfounded. If you take liberties it will bite, but so rewarding when you get it right.
The best way to describe it would be the M5 is sensitive to your inputs. The RS was more of a blunt instrument. But a fast one at that.

Costs wise i spent around 5k on the RS in a 12 month period excluding depreciation. Will be interesting to see how much the M5 costs.
When the FL 6's become affordable for me I be back into an Audi no doubt.

Hope this helps anyone who is thinking of the change.

Reading isn't your strong point, is it?

Glad your enjoying her.

She is an epic car & even without the upgrades was a real weapon, but fettled is a monster.

Against other M5's, I found her to have far better traction as many have the 20" wheel & for some reason the 19"s offer better grip in the wet. Also a few had Pirelli tyres from the factory whereas the MPSS are far superior on the M5. That said, the car of course requires a little respect when conditions aren't great, but personally I prefer the fact it's a drivers car.

Having been out in that car in less than optimal conditions (Insane driver at the wheel), I can safely say that it's a handful. On the plus side, I'm still here to tell the tale so the car's electronics must be clever (Maybe a little bit of driver experience). It's a monster of a car, enjoy it :)

Great car choice!
However, I might be considered a tad bias as I've got an M5 Competition pack car which has the M performance (Akrapovic) exhaust system fitted.

Had mine for about a month. Can concur it's a fantastic car and it sounds great! Drive to the conditions and it's fine.
Mine has MPSS all round and we've had some lovely days weather wise recently where I've gone WOT and it's seriously Omg fast without drama.

That's almost slander Mr T.

You wouldn't come out in the car unless i had 'all the electronics' switched on :bigblink:

Agreed though, she needs handling with a little care when trying to break 3 min laps at Spa in the rain/sleet at temps of only 2-3 degrees. :beerchug:
