691BHP!!

Post by W8PMC » Wed Sep 03, 2014 9:44 am

Well yesterday was the day my car visited DMS for a fettle & holy mother of all a things holy did they do a fantastic job (under difficult conditions).

My M5 is a MY15 & therefore has a few changes to certain software elements that DMS hadn't encountered yet (specifically the dashboard in this case) & therefore didn't have code for so it's a good job their remaps are Custom or i'd have been driving round with an Xmas tree in front of me with lights illuminated everywhere. Rob line by line corrected the code, cleared all the relevant fault codes & i'm just left with a check engine light (knew in advance this would be the case) for which he'll have the corrected line of code in a week or so & apply that when suitable. It was a trade off by having the check engine light illuminated or having no gear change display in the centre of the dash (this is different on MY15 cars as has an upshift indicator).

Firstly my car was dyno'd to get a pre map plot & we were more than a little surprised at the results. I should point out DMS use a Dyno Dynamics system. My car stock was putting out 640bhp, which was the strongest F10 they'd seen, although all (i think they said 3) had read over 610bhp stock. We knew that at this level the physicals gains were unlikely to be as high as previous F10's they'd tuned given the base power was higher, however the end result was 691bhp. Note the car was running quite hot by this time as had been on the rollers a while so DMS could fine tune the code & my car has only done 4500 miles.

With cooler temps & more miles on my car, they're confident it would have just topped the 700bhp mark.

The drive home was something else & the extra power is most noticeable in the mid range where the car has gone from being ballistic before to intergalactic now. The power & torque curves on the F10 M5 are a shaped a bit like a lemon so the gains at the bottom & top of the rev range are closer together than the middle. The uplift in mid range is close to 100bhp.

Given the issues encountered, i was running out of time as had been onsite for 7 hours & needed to get away so DMS couldn't test on the rollers in the speed limiter had effectively been removed. I'm off to Germany on Saturday so will check this out on the Autobahn. I also forget to collect my dyno plots so these are being sent to me & i'll post them up when i receive them.

So only a 50PS gain?

Suprised when the C7 gets a 140PS gain.

They're probably running higher boost as standard. ~700bhp is awesome, being RWD it must be pretty much lethal with traction control off!

Enjoy your trip to Germany!

Think it's a larger gain than that realistically. Seems like he was 30-40hp in the first place so gains were closer to the 100hp mark. Also mentioned the mid range gains are around 100hp which is where you really want it. My mates tuned red m5 with zorst is very close with my gtr [THUMBS UP SIGN]

Nevermind the power, what's the torque? How manly is the DCT in this respect?

It's all relative Dave as only so much power/torque will be safely available from the engine. Stock power on paper is meant to be i think 570bhp so the full gain over stock is actually 121bhp, however as mine was way over this stock, a smaller net gain but equivalent gross gain. Of the few F10 M5's DMS have tuned, all have been over 600bhp stock & 1 other was over 620 so mine is perhaps a slight anomaly as this car only made 680 with the custom tune. Only difference on paper is mine's a 2015 MY & BMW did change the intakes slightly but don't quote any more stock power for this change.

Widely known that BMW have for whatever reason vastly under quoted the power figures. I've no idea why they'd do this given their competition, but i guess Nissan did the same with the GT-R although perhaps not tot he same levels.

640 stock?! What am I missing here, I thought these were more like 560PS - 575PS, did BWM actually release these cars into the wild with more than 80PS output over spec? That's madness, what would the legal implications be? This is like the anti-B7 for making power.

Would be delighted to exchange PAX laps:)

They are meant to be that level but for whatever reason those that have been RR'd are making North of 600+bhp. BMW also quote 4.3sec 0-62 but many have been VBOX'd at just under 4 so something isn't adding up but it looks as though it's to the positive so i ain't gonna complain. The delta in the mid range power is just under 100bhp between pre & post map on my car (will check when the plots arrive later) so that's a crazy level of uplift & very noticeable.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's awesome. I just wonder if there'd be basis for a lawsuit (class grouped or otherwise, well, in the US at least).

Fat 'Merican - Yes Your Honour, I crashed because the car had too much power and if I'd known, I'd not have purchased said car.

BMW solicitor - The car has 560BHP, this is within the design remit and it is acceptable for a car of this weight and the safety features available.

Fat 'Merican's solicitor - Please see exhibit A, you will note we tested 30 x F10 M5 cars and all had an output over 600BHP, some measuring 640BHP.

BMW solicitor - Errrrrm, may I request a sidebar, Your Honour?

I think long before it came to court any decent Barrister would agree that American's (especially fat ones) can't drive on anything other than an arrow straight piece of tarmac so inaccurate outputs are null & void :bigblink:

But now an even quicker BMW :bigblink:

TBH, DMS still are the only Tuner i'd really trust. I've used others & can't complain but for pure custom coding i'd want Rob in my ECU.
