New M3/M4

Post by Nickyboy » Sun Jun 22, 2014 6:01 pm

Went for a test drive today.

Brief thoughts:

Looks: I thought the M3 looked loads nicer than the M4. It had awesome front and rear arches and had serious purpose to it.

Sound: pretty artificial but it did make a nice noise and had decent volume.

Power: I expected more from it but it did pull hard in third however traction was lighting up in 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

Interior: a step on from the B8 but not miles ahead.

Handling: awesome, it felt so dialled in and cornered with ease. Stiff suspension was actually nice where the B8 dynamic suspension is awful.

Seats: standard seats are better than the Audi seats but not as good as the buckets.

Gearbox: very quick both up and down.

Spec: basic spec is pretty good. I only added 7k to the basic car.

Overall I thought it was a great car but not enough to make me seriously think about one. I'd take another RS 5 over the M4 and undecided on RS 4 vs M3.

Had the quote through to finance it and there is zero discount to be had although I haven't pushed it hard.

Therefore give me the RS 4 with an exhaust if going new.

Second hand I'd be tempted by any of M3/4 RS 4/5 but without discount BMW will not be getting any of my money.

When I was looking for a new motor (had to be a V8 next step up) only two cars came to mind, (M3 or RS4) get another M3 or change

Having already had an M3 (e46) for years I got bored, it lost its thrill, so a change was needed, bigger engine wanted 4 doors. Looked at E9x m3's and I just thought to myself......Ive already had an M3 what if I get bored of this one, so RS4 it was and Quattro persuaded me heavily towards the RS4 also and the 4 doors, looks more grown up tbh, the rs4 actually suits 4 doors, I thought 4 doors on the m3 just didn't look right at all
Red B7 RS4 Saloon......That is all!!

If only they did similar lease deals to those on the M135i at the beginning of the year. Made the Golf R seem expensive. :o

You can't really expect a discount on an M3 at launch. It'll be a different story once not so new to the market. However, the dealer will have no problem selling their allocated build slots at full price, hence, no need to discount for you as the next customer will buy at list.

Why are you after a discount, to one up the dealer, or is it just that little bit more than you want to spend?

The 'no discount' policy will work in your favour when you come to change it, the same can't be said for a B8 RS 4, why would you buy a nearly new one when a new one is available at XYZ discount. Swings and roundabouts.

Thanks for the review.

Wanting a discount is out of principal I think. I'm used to getting discount with Audi so expect the same with anyone else. As you said though all slots will be taken fairly quickly so why should they give me discount. Part of me likes the whole negotiation part of getting a car.

For me I'd rather spend 45k on a B8 than 63k on an M3.

I'm relocating to Japan for a bit anyway so won't be buying any new cars until I get back.

If you do get a chance I would drive one as it was an impressive motor.

Couldn't make the launch event as was on holiday, but had a good paw over the M3/4's at my local dealers yesterday & i think BMW have got it bang on with both cars. TBH i ever so slightly prefer the M3 as have always preferred Saloons, but both models looked stunning.

If the stats are to be believed & no reason to doubt them, it would destroy a B8 RS4 on the road & track. Also which surprised me, the engine/zorst note sounded fantastic.

Still easy to get over 7.5k off the list price before options.

Yes, that's good, but it was better still before.

I thought most people were mentioning about 7.5k in the past.
