I'd not expect the B8 platform to take the honours.

The new M3/4 is new breed, lighter, smaller forced induction engine. Everyone is heading in this direction, emissions dictates this. Audi will follow in due course and then B9 will take the upper hand. Same old.

Not as though Audi don't know how to make a light weight sports car....

It's kinda always been the case though.
On track the equivalent M3 car has always just had an advantage over the RS one.
But TBH track times isn't what the RS cars are about. on the road in real world conditions the RS car is far more usable on bumpy or imperfect road conditions.

I'd imagine the next RS4 to use a variant of the 4.0v8 but downsized. We know that engine can run comfortably at 560ps so if you were to chop 2 cylinders off (very much a simple wet finger in the air) you'd be looking at a 3l v6 twin turbo with about 420 ps - almost perfect. I'd still think it highly unlikely that the B9 RS4/5 would get under 1600 kgs though. the engine would be lighter but the gearbox may need some tweaking as the torque would be that much higher.

Lightweight sports cars are easy... Light weight normal road cars now that's the tough part!

All I know is, an ///M Power BMW is on my 'must own' list one day.

I don't know about that - for example my e92 m3 was much better over bumpy roads than my b7 rs4 - much better damped. I had the ss+ on my RS, or who knows, maybe my drc was shot but the m was noticeable better IMO.

Anyway I drove the new M3 this week also - it only had 24 miles on it so I couldn't push it but it looked fantastic and sounded actually quite good considering I'm currently in a c63.

I thought it sounded artificial yet still good. Apparently they will offer a titanium exhaust as an option in the coming months.

the one thing that really got highlighted with the rs5 next to the m4 was those stupid "winglets" in the side vents for the m4.
