Why? The standard 19" wheels are perfect for the car & although no doubt down to personal taste, look much better on the car than the optional 20's which are far too common as all the early cars & press cars opted for them.

Running Michelin Pilot Super Sports with 295 at the back & 265 up front so i don't think reducing there size would be a sensible idea.

Saw one parked at the Park Lane Hilton yesterday looked mega, more aggressive than my C6 parked near it.

None taken:)

Must be the photo as the wheels fit the arches & the tyres are huge. Bear in mind M's have an offset so the front tyres are a touch smaller than the rears. As above, the rears are 295 but the fronts 265 & i'm sure the profile is slightly different. Will post some better piccies when i get around to it:)

He doesn't like the noise, hides round the corner until the engine's off. He was the same with the GT-R:)
you know, there are cheaper ways to scare a dog yeah?? ha

so, whats better? GTR or M5...

That's a tricky one to answer as although both very fast cars, i personally much prefer the new M5 as it does so much more than the GT-R could, albeit the M5 not being quite as fast.

The best way i can describe it is the M5 performance wise is within 85-90% of the GT-R (basing this on the standard GT-R variant of the MY i had as the newer models are quicker still), but as a long distance cruiser it's considerably better, build quality is naturally better & the Tech is a decade more advanced so overall i personally feel it's a far more accomplished package, but the GT-R is an epic vehicle when it comes to performance & next to nothing can touch them.

What did surprise me & i've not yet tracked my M5 is the 2 cars are closer on track than i'd have expected:

Think you've hit the nail on the head with that one.

If its flat out performance you're after (in a reasonable package) then GT-R is for you. but if its a car you can use everyday then the M cars, RS's and AMG mercs take a lot of beating.

Just got to wait a bit longer till the B8 RS4 arrives for me...

Sorry to raise this thread from November, but thought it apt as now the car has covered nearly 3000 miles & is fully run in i thought i'd add further comment.

It's fair to say i've pretty much fallen in love with the car now, even though it's had a few off the road days at my local BMW dealer with a faulty fuel injector & a couple of minor oil leaks (the latter spotted by Bowker BMW during a free health check last week & rectified quickly).

Now i've started to exploit the power more & engage the more hardcore settings of the car, i'm constantly in amazement at how well it does everything. The tech inside would keep any geek engaged for any length of journey & the levels of comfort, trim & luxury are second to none. What really engages me though is how it can transform from luxury saloon into a full attack sports car so quickly & effortlessly & just how good it is at both.

A couple of crude timed launches (not engaging launch control) & the car is hitting 62 in around 4 secs with little effort but it's the pull from 30mph up to warp speed that amazes the most as it's relentless. Although fairly predictable, you have to keep your wits about you when pushing on at this time of year as the rears will still break traction under load in 3rd & even 4th gear so in lower gears it can be a bit of a handful when damp on the road & i'm sure this won't help the rather tame running costs when it comes to how often the rear tyres need replacing. That said, i'm enjoying the adaptation to a different driving style & the general grip when approaching & in a corner is staggering, you just have to be a little later on the loud pedal when exiting a corner.

Overall i'm extremely happy with my new M5 & although it would never match a GT-R in a 0-62 drag race & would struggle a little to lap most tracks quite as quickly, i'm hearing they're more than a match in gear from 50-150 & the overall package for me is preferred as sometimes it's nice to sit back & have a more relaxing driving experience & the GT-R never offered me that. One last point, nobody really looks, stares or appreciates my M5 in the same way they did the GT-R as apart from close up the M5 isn't overly different externally to a 520d M Sport.

Oh they do ! but as you say it's very understated which is what i like about it.
It's the car geeks that know what it is.
You can spot them easily on the move - car windows roll down to listen to the sound LOL
Kids can spot it from a mile away - WOW Mr That car is just sick man LOL
Or maybe it's the colour of mine that screams M5 - bit like my sprint blue B7 everyone knew it was an RS because of the colour

Watch your screen wash too
BM's have filters on the washer pumps so they block real easy if you use non BM screen wash - had the pipe under the bumper come off for the headlamp washers - bit of a pain cause you have to remove the under tray

Not yet they haven't, but mine's Singapore grey so perhaps a quieter colour. I too had a Sprint Blue B7 RS4 & that did look far more shouty than it's regular B7 relatives:) The GT-R just shouted all the time so no chance of hiding in that.

I like the stealth of it though & not a fan of drawing attention so subtle is suiting me fine:)

Me too Paul:) Need a little bit of coaching in all things oversteer before September though so am keeping my eyes peeled for some cheap but local track days in the Spring so i can fully explore & exploit the M5 before Spa/Ring.

Makes sense, hire an instructor for the day, money really well spent.

May invest in one for an hour or 2 at Spa & will defo seek some instruction prior to that in an attempt to get to grips with all the RWD power;)

When Sonny's instructor took him out in his RS4 at Spa he was shocked at the difference, wow can the car really do that......

Sonny is no mean pedaler too.
