Re: M550d
I just dont see the point in a 5.0l deisel.
Just get a proper M5

I love drag racing and track racing. I have had many fast cars and below is a short list of the ones most memorable.

It isn't a 5.0l, it's a three litre triple turbo.

....I am a torque addict. I didn't 'believe' until I had DMS breathe on my 535d. I am now in the best of both worlds; the RS3 gives a wave of diesel esque torque up until around 4k and then brut horsepower driven shove takes over upto the limiter.
Having said the above, I haven't driven the F10 M5; turbo v8 must be a sensation and a half.

Re: M550d
Oh dear. Thats worse. Triple turbo is a stupid idea. Why not have a larger second turbo to increae torque/bhp. Thats one more thing that will go wrong. And with BMWs ceramic bladed turbos they usually do. Unless its hanged. BTW on mobile so thats reason for sp/punct errors.Amar wrote:It isn't a 5.0l, it's a three litre triple turbo.

Triple turbo is a clever idea, Audi will probably try one five/six years later. They've just caught up with the '35D engines.

Re: M550d
Triple turbo is not clever on a 6 cyl deisel. I am sorry but if BMW went with a large second turbo with progressive pressure increase up to the lazy 4k or whatever they rev too. Yyou could probably get more power with just as smooth acceleration.Amar wrote:Triple turbo is a clever idea, Audi will probably try one five/six years later. Sorry for going on but this is just amother ooohhhh look we put 3 turbos on a deisel. Were soo clever.
What would have been clever is keeping woth 2 turbos amd getting the smooth delivery and power increase.

Re: M550d
I drove a new X50d around brands hatch a few months ago and was rather impresses with the effortlessness of the engine and gearbox combo
I have had Both a 535d and x5 with same engine both remapped and they are stonking cars and it only took Audi about 8 years to catch up with a Twin turbo diesel
I also had a new M5 on loan last Christmas and put about 1k miles on one. The slippery roads won't have helped but I didn't really enjoy it all and it almost killed me twice!

+1 on the 535 and X5 ownership. I also had a brief stint in a 335d touring. Such a flexible engine.535dboy wrote:I drove a new X50d around brands hatch a few months ago and was rather impresses with the effortlessness of the engine and gearbox combo

How did it feel tuned to x50d levels, same as a DMS car?
Re: M550d
If it is the setup i beleive it to be, The third turbo isn't in series.
It's connected by a gearing mech direct to the crank.
So there is a small turbo for response, a larger turbo for power and the third one that adds every last bit direct to the crank (not compressing air) under full load conditions.
It makes a surprising difference - I plays with a prototype one a few years back that you could electronically enable and disable and when climbing hills if was very noticeable when activated.

Pick up was amazing but this will have also been masked by the seem less 8 speed auto.
You don't get the same sense of speed on the circuit as a road but it was swift but no I didn't consider one
Bet in a 5 series it is a weapon - the F10s just leave me cold

Re: M550d
Agree 535d is great. Power smooth and fast. Personally I would have gone laeger second turbo route and too be honest I have never driven the 550d.535dboy wrote:I drove a new X50d around brands hatch a few months ago and was rather impresses with the effortlessness of the engine and gearbox combo

Maybe the car modder in me saya larger for more powr.
Been there and done that.
Re: M550d
Eh? They've been there (twin turbo diesel), done that, about eight years back actually! I had a 335D with a twin turbo diesel for two years, it's Audi who it took nearly a decade to catch up. BMW have now moved the game on, don't knock the '50d until you've tried it, you thought the engine was a 5.0 10 mins ago which shows how little you actually know about it. If anything, the only pointless diesel ever made, if any, is the 6.0 V12 TDI in the Q7.Hedgehog Dodger wrote:What would have been clever is keeping woth 2 turbos amd getting the smooth delivery and power increase.Amar wrote:Triple turbo is a clever idea, Audi will probably try one five/six years later.
