I thought about the Arthur involved here...
I'd guess at the start with all the cars bunched up at La Source the slowest Alonso would have been going is about 40mph (but I suspect it would be nearer 60mph).
At 40mph thats works out at just under 60 feet / second.
The lotus jumped over the Ferrari about 2-3 feet from Alonso's head.
So I make it that if the crash had been 0.03-0.04 seconds later then I suspect we'd be down one double world champion.
(I'm no Alonso fan at all in the slightest however I think F1 would be poorer for it if he taken out)

Even as it was, need to remember drivers sit with their legs high up - their knees are only just below eye level and that Lotus hit right on that part. A true testament to modern F1 chassis strength.

iirc I was going over 40mph in my Mini at La Source.

Totally agree that we could of been a driver or two short, even only a few years ago not sure who would have walked away with minor or no injuries.

Zanardi was really lucky to survive that too and to carry on racing takes a very special person.

Yeah I thought they would be faster but it's really hard to gauge on the first corner when they are all bunched up like that - ends up being much slower than racing speed.

Zanardi is an inspiration - to get back into a race car after losing both legs takes a special person. IIRC he's competing at the paralympics too.
I don't think anybody would have been surprised if he decided to not do any of that.

We were sat at Pouhon in amongst the crazy Germans

At the end we walked up Eau Rouge which was epic.

Go before these horrible new, boring, sterile tracks outside Europe ruin the F1 calander.

Just giving the heads up, as you know Spa is a very fast circuit and its easy to have a big one.
