Challenge me!!

Post by ecain63 » Sun Jul 19, 2009 9:42 pm

Im in need of a physical challenge for 2009. Ive already done a couple this year (easy ones) but i need something to test me.
My 2008 challenge was to cycle solo from Lands End to John O Groats in under 5 days - thats just over 900 miles. I did it in 4 1/2 days, so job done. Something along those lines ie. cheap but hard, is what i need.

What did my hero Ranulph Feinnes do after his triple heart pass ?? 7 Marathons in 7 days in 7 continents was it??? A little gentle jog to be looked at perhaps? Not cheap perhaps unless you can get Virgin and BA to sponsor you or may maybe Emirates perhaps!

Thats the thing. I had looked into the 'extreme marathons / expeditions' but entry fees for some are over £11k. How can they justify it? I just wanna climb everest, or do sky dive from space, or survive solo in the jungle for a month but not spend too much doin it. It needs to be at least a couple of days long. I may be kayaking form Poole harbour to France soon, but even that isnt that hard.

A colleague from work has just completed the Race Across America (RAAM), as a soloist competitor. Google it.

It's touted as THE MOST extreme endurance race you can do. Harder than Iron Man.

It's essentially a cycle race from West to East coast of America = 3005miles. He completed it in 11days !
He cycled for an average of of 20hrs each day no rest from start to finish.

Put that in comparison - your Lands End to John O'Groats - you averaged c200miles per day for 4.5 days. He did over 300miles a day for almost 12 consecutive days...

He's also climbed Everest and all the other High Peaks.

His preparation took 18 months, and slept in saunas (to get used to deserts), and oxygen tents (for The Rockies). What a Nutter !!
