I F**king hate it!
Just bought a new pc. Can't use my old usb modem, all the layout is different, it's just bloody annoying! It's now sat next to my old trusty XP system.
It's p*ssing me off!

No problems at all with it here, but then its my job to make sure PCs work properly
You tried drivers for your modem from the manufacturers site at all?

Downloaded the driver. Doesn't support it. The 'info' from the new pc says that it doesn't support usb modems. I'm going to upgrade to wireless tomorrow and go from there.....

I've been running Vista Ultimate for a couple of weeks, and while I like it, I work in IT and felt compelled to start using it.
If your running fine on XP, then I wouldn't bother upgrading unless you really need to have the latest features.
BTW, a lot of manufacturers still allow you to downgrade a new PC to XP so it doesnt *HAVE* to come pre-loaded with Vista.

Cheers TopBear. Just bought it today, preloaded with Vista Premium. I feel like wiping the HD and starting again!

You really shouldn't be using a USB Modem ( I assume that you mean a DSL modem). It is the quickest way for your machine to be compromised going. The simplest thing to do is to get a standard ADSL Router with an Ethernet interface and connect the PC to the Router. If you turn on the security on the router you will have the basics covered as far as security if concerned plus you will find that the link is faster. Any of the Netgear ADSL Routers would be fine.
Vista is a good product that takes getting used to....give it a chance and upgrade it to SP1 when it is available.

Ive been using it for a few months now... even with all teh aero crap and stuff turned off its slow.... and that on a dual 1.7 with 3gb ram I have a spare 1.3 ghz p3 laptop with 256mb ram that I prefer using sometimes..... thought many times to binning vista. utlook 2007 is really slow compared to oulook 2003 too.... does my nut in....
recently had a shot of a mates mac ibook air.... seriously considering converting!

I'm puzzled jeff - why does it make a difference if the 'interior' interface on your router is USB or Ethernet?* They're both LAN side ports, and the firewall policy acts on traffic ingressing on the WAN port by default (the cable/xDSL side) ...
Ethernet ports on a 'home' router are bridged, not routed (there's no IP subnet per port) - they all exist in the same subnet, so there's no extra IP functionality you can apply to the ethernet ports for security purposes (AFAIK)
Agree that 10/100 is faster than USB for your PC-to-router link .... but really makes no difference when your uplink to the network is 2mbps ....
* genuine question btw - security isn't my thing, so am actually interested to know.

I've tried vista several time's on different pc's that friends have asked me to look at as well as trying it on one of my own pc's and found it a real PITA and a complete sac of crap, but each to their own.

Mike, my laptop I recently bought has Vista Home premium, also bought a Netgear wireless router at same time, and even I managed to set it up to work pretty quickly/easily..... took a little while to sort the security settings, but got there in the end.
Could give you a hand, if you need one?

Don't know who supplied the PC to you, but perhaps go back to them and insist that they supply you with a copy of XP, FOC, as your other hardware peripherals don't work with Vista, otherwise you will have to return the PC.
They should be able to do something.

I'm sure the SP1 beta I'm running said it would tell me when SP1 was GA... Thanks MS!!!
I kinda like Vista, and I say that having recently been through the which OS quandry. I wouldn't touch a Mac with yours, and linux took an age to setup and then delivered way under what Windows 3.11 "for Groupies" delivered 40 million years ago. Don't get me wrong.... each to their own, and linux works great on this server (Isn't bogomips a great measurement unit!!), and a Mac is great if you have an image crisis.
I'd say if you have a new system and have the sense to fill it full of RAM (= performance) then Vista is the only choice. XP is OK if the system is sub 3 GB RAM.

Dunno, I never installed the SP beta, however I'm sure I've read in the previous propaganda, ....err I mean Microsoft literature, that it's going to be drip fed to the general public during April via Windows Update as an 'Important Update', so you should see the 'wee yellow shield' popup in your taskbar soon
