here are the pearls of wisdom for those that cannot view the link. This is a lad talking about his 1.2 corsa.

"I agree with your point, but the car is a little quicker than the standard SXi and so I felt the SRi badges were appropriate. It only carries 1 person, Me. It has no extra weight in the car, all glove compartments, cubby holes and the boot is empty. The rear exhaust may or may not add power. It has only ever run on Optimax, I know you get more boost out if this fuel on bigger engined cars but every little helps. The tyres are always inflated to 38 PSI to give extra grip and less tyre slouch. Often I put the rear seats flat, this reduces weight. (Like why you crawl flat across a frozen pond so as not to break the ice). I regularly drive with around £10 of fuel, again weight saving, and often I use engine cleaner in the fuel load to remove debris from the fuel injectors. The car is always clean improving aerodynamic progress. I have timed the 0 - 60 at 9.3 seconds, and this shaves a couple of seconds off the standard time. Hope this answers your question."

The rear seat thing, It is rare that I fold them down, but it has to be said that when folded they remove a bit of weight. Vertical seats exert more downward force because the energy is focused on a smaller surface area. When horizontal, the weight is spread and so is less per Centimetre squared.

Not only am I going to fold down my rear seats but the passenger and drivers ones too. Wow I never realised you could gain so much. I've also tried running with only £10 of fuel to help....but it rained really heavily as I walked home to get my jerry can.

Poor deluded "kid". Running his tyres at 38psi...isn't that more than a normal 1.2 Corsa would use and therefore reduces grip...but hey it also reduces the co-efficient of friction between the tyres and the tarmac so shaving 0.00001 second off his 0 to 60 time. But it also increases his 60 to lamppost time by a factor of 10.

I've just done the whole mod (even removed the touch-up paint stick from the glove compartment).

I've also put the ski-hatch down - you never know, "every little helps"...

anyone taken their paint off yet? Just had a go with a brillo pad, can't wait to see how much quicker I'm going to be.

Yes, got the orbital sander out of the shed, took quite a few sheets of sandpaper though... Swirl marks of doom! Also took the tyres to 80psi, I hope that my improved 0-60 time adds value to potential buyers when I come to change the car; as long as they are blind of course!

perhaps another weight saving option our friend hasn't thought of yet is removing all windows, it's actually a double edged sword - why deflect air around the car when it can just whistle right through it by the shortest route thus, in theory, improving the drag co-efficient

if that doesn't work well then its bye bye bonnet imho

your comments have been noted, and are of the usual high calibre. Needless to say ive got rid of those stupid calipers on the brakes that way a ton.i will try and post a link to this thread to the afforementiond automotive innovater. Needless to say it may be difficult to contact the lad as gurus such as this are often head hunted by the motorsport divisions of automotive multinationals as soon as there suggestions, thoughts and original modifications reach the masses and are so warmly adopted. needless to say he os probably in a top secret r and d facility in germany by now.

@ steve h. 80 psi is not enough. i have had startling results with 90 psi and would set this as the reccomendation for all audis.
@ clive h. to lower just the ski hatch is but to make a mockery of the valuable information you have been given. please stick to the information EXACTLY or the results will be affected. seats down all the way or nothing at all please.

I have a cargo net in the boot, will placing items under it increase the downforce? perhaps i could increase the downforce further by using ratchet straps for a healthy improvement in the handling. obviously this would be far more tunable as i could slacken the straps to increase the horsepower when required.

Having read your weight saving comments with some interest, and in an effort to make my RS4 Avant lighter thereby squeeze out every last drop of top end performance bhp ( power to weight ratio) I had the idea of filling the boot with helium. But I'm no fool so I engaged the flexy-net/dog guard thingy to keep the potentially lethal gas in place so it wouldn't permeate the cabin and potentially asphixiate me as I was giving her some beans.

Sadly this didn't work and I was quickly overcome by the fumes and wrapped my beloved car around a tree at the bottom of my driveway. When I came round the needle was stuck at 120 mph, which was the fastest I'd been on my driveway, but alas I have no way of knowing how long it took me to reach that terminal speed.

You'll be further pleased to know that I 'm OK but unfortunately the car is a total write-off, but thanks again for your inspiration.
