Insurance for youngsters
Insurance for youngsters
Has anybody got any good ideas as to how to go about insuring a youngster to drive........ quotes for 17 yr old driving a Mini start at £3500 and go up steeply after that. Majority wont insure below 25 yrs and ones that will seem to want me to incur the price of the car for a premium. Where is Insurance John when you need him!!!!!! Have tried all the normal channels and am now getting seriously miffed off....

RE: Insurance for youngsters
Only three real solutions to this problem Simon.
1. bite the bullet and pay the money
2. put him on your insurance as a named driver
3. buy him a pill to start with and let him climb the rungs himself

Too much is bad.
Plenty is better.

Cheers Gav...... think it will have to be a purchase of an old Fiesta for him to drive, then get him into the Mini... makes little sense as the mini has ABS, traction and stability control and air bags....... the Fiesta has none of these.....
What about that new thing that Direct Line is touting where a named driver gets to earn NCD - if it'a any good you could be the primary driver......
99 FL, Reflex Silver, H&R Coilovers and ARBs, AWE DTS, Miltek Duel Cat Back, Hyperboost DVs, Autometer Boost Guage, RS4 18" Reps, Tanoga SS, Lecky SR, Nappa, Bose, Cruise, Phatnoise, MRC Custom remap, RS246 Sticker.
my lad got quoted about that sort of money for his metro so it got sold and he,s now driving a rover 214si..and insurance was only 1650.. he,s with elephant .co.uk..mite be worth a try..

Mate,
Try going for a car that's not a typical 17yr olds...
Stuff like novas etc.. get weighted cos so many crash in them, try for example an old VW polo (good car too) or a mazda 121 (bloody fiesta anyway)
What I'm saying is it's not just about insurance groups, although that makes a difference some cars are far cheaper than others.
Oh and it goes without saying that 3rd party is cheaper than 3rd party F+T which is cheaper than fully comp.
I bet, for example, a diesel astra estate (unlikely choice for a young lad) would be next to no money to insure. And interestingly I have one for sale at a very reasonable price
all the best Si, long time no see.

hey,
Is he still a student? im with endsleigh been very good to me by all accounts. im 22 now been with them since i got my own car at 18, i was a named driver on before that point. currently driving a 1.6 fiesta zetec S and £650 fully comp and full no claims. best to get some insurance history in their own name expensive for the first couple of years but pays dividends a few years along!....i just wished i could get a policy that would let me drive other cars, my dad might not be so happy if i did find one though!
hope this is help
cheers Rob

Had to bite the bullet and pay......... my own company would have covered him on fleet policy for £275 but he was limited to TPF&T and group 4 cars til 21...... now has group 8 mini insured fully comp for £3500, nearly half the value of the car, in his own name and my 20 years claim free are not at risk..............
I remember when i first started driving 7 years ago I had a mk 1 astra worth about £400 if that and it cost me £600 to insure TPFT. My brother had a fiat panda as a first car again worth next to nothing but that cost the best part of £900 to insure TPFT for him at the same age I was when i passed.
Bullshit baffles brains
I'm gobsmacked at these premiums .. not having kids I didn't know it was this bad! This would explain why so many youngsters drive uninsured - especially when they normally only cop a £ 250 for driving without insurance. I'd agree with the comments about getting non typical cars...an Astra diesel van probably has little or no street cred but would save a shed load of money. I do recall that when I was young my car insurance was steep, but £3½ grand on a Mini now that's a crime!
RS4 in the only colour to have - Misano Red | MRC Remap | RS6+ brakes | H&R and Custom Performance Parts suspension |
Huge Grin
If you dont "do it now" you never will.

Astra diesel van was virtually the same price, tried that, as soon as they hear Turbo its curtains....... also tried him in 12 yr old Cherokee, 2.5 was fine....... hear turbo again......... lights out. Mini is group 8E what ever that means....... highly sought after is the insurance blurb........ yer right......Feck it, its done now and with Pass plus and one yr NCB it should half..........30% discount for the pass plus and 20% for one year......... seeing will be believing.
Thats an outrageous quotation..
When i was 17, i went onto my mums policy for about 6 months, then starting buying cars with free insurance included.. Renault Clio 1.2, then swapped them in for the latest cars with free insurance, went into a Fiesta Zetec 1.25 16v, then into a new model Clio on a Y plate (again with free insurance). By that point, i had racked up 3 years NCB and so my first new Bmw 318ci at the age of 19 only cost me £1200 to insure.
Now 24 with 7 years NCB and my range rover sport TDV6 costs me £685. Have been quoted £1200 for the RS4 which arrives hopefully May/June. Was cheaper to buy new cars and loose money on them rather then pay out for the insurance, (plus having new car every 12 months was nice and i would have rather put the money into the newer cars, rather then pay for something you'll hopefully not ever need!).
As said before, one year in with 1 years NCB, it will make a world of difference.
I always go for:
Direct Line, Privilege (same company), Tesco, Egg,
And for drivers with 0 NCB, norwich union on their NCB accelerator programme is always best in my experience. Got my mate insured at age of 23 with 0 NCB but been driving since 19 into an Audi A3 1.9TDI for £650 which was a lot cheaper then we were all expecting with norwich union. (edited to say, this was with 3 current points! on driveway in okish post code.)
Pay for 9 months, and get 1 year NCB... helps lads in your sons position to rack up their NCB.
