Italy is fine, I always travel at the speeds the other cars are going, ie fast, I regularly run at 220-260 kph, but I might be lucky. If a car flies by and it has Rep San Merino plates, I don't give chase, these guysprobably don't care about speeding.
Croatia is a mixture of countries, down the coast you should be OK but its a slow drive all the way down, but very beautiful. Packed with tourists this year. As to tolerance, regrettably some residents of Croatia are still in the shadow of their recent conflicts, so quite a few people have very entrenched attitudes, so be careful and polite, just in case.
This might sound odd, but a for example, I was earnestly assured that British troops carried out armed bank robberies in Croatia during the troubled times, but they only robbed banks in Croat ownership and left the ones in Croatian Serb ownership alone, because Prince Philip's cousin married the King of Serbia.
So take care out there!
